What a blessing it is that He uses affliction to draw us nearer to Him, to cause us to depend on Him and Him alone. I love Psalm 119:75....in faithfulness You have afflicted me.
This past year has been a year of affliction that I too despaired life itself, and thought I had received the death sentence. But, I know He sent the affliction so that I would not rely on myself (or anyone) but instead rely on God who raises the dead (2 Cor 1:8-10). Thank you Lord that you deliver the afflicted by our affliction.
The questioner asks if Christians ever miss what God is aiming to teach them through their suffering.
I think the answer to this is that we usually miss it. Normally, God has to patiently teach and reteach the lesson until we finally get it.
John Piper makes the good point that many Christians have never been taught about the value of suffering in the Christian life. It is a major biblical theme, but sadly many church leaders ignore it.
ОтветитьAs someone who lived without God for most of my life, i truly can say i would much rather the suffering in Gods redirecting me then the suffering i used to have with no renewing of my strength in him.
ОтветитьThis was so helpful during my own current afflictions.
ОтветитьTo add, being that the whole world and everything in it to various degrees is cursed, affliction is experienced by all, and that affliction alongside our relentless longings for satisfaction drives our hearts to idols, which is why everyone needs the Gospel and the Bible as a whole. Without it, our suffering will forever be misinterpreted as God not loving us when really suffering is intended to show us the worthlessness of our idoltary and drive us to him who has subjected the world to futility and death WITH HOPE! (Romans 8)
By grace, when the Gospel invades our lives and we repent and trust in Jesus, we come to see that the afflictions of this world are a tool by God to make us see that nothing and no one in this world was designed to satisfy us and only he can, so it is pointless to keep pursuing idols when they fail to remove our suffering and satisfy us even if we do attain those things that we desire more than God and enjoy sin for a long while. Nothing removes the sting of death, and the suffering of this world, as terrible as it is, still barely qualifies as a precursor to the ultimate affliction we all deserve, which is eternal torment in the lake of fire due to idolatry.
So one of the most merciful things God can do is painfully drive out of us idolatrous pursuits through sufferings, so that if necessary, the only thing we have to turn to for comfort and hope is himself.
God's most severe judgment on earth is letting people continue to indulge in wealth, fame, success, and pride with lack of cautionary affliction and no sense of urgent need for him and security in the afterlife until ultimately they die in that state of unrepentance and all the affliction they were spared and that they experienced is nothing compared to the judgment they will endure forever.
Somebody needs to preach Jesus, the rapture is about to take place,
