so ice to see the other half of the video. Great job. You have some skills. You can see all the love you put in your work. I have a LP myself and love the instrument. Gibson made a winner with the Les Paul. Bye... see you later. Bert from the Netherlands
ОтветитьWhat is the clamping or hold time for the fish glue in this fretting application? Glue instructions read 12hr clamp but I know that is not practical here. I have used CA glue in the past and know that is fast, fish glue is new to me. Thank you.
ОтветитьI have an ESP Eclipse that has x-jumbo frets...I like it.
ОтветитьI can’t hear a difference with stainless steel frets over nickel/copper either.
Your work is amazing and I so wish I could develop your level of care and patience.
I got a Gibson es125 and the frets where like this and even smaller. Zero crown, tiny frets. They look like the mandolin wire on your fret examples.
ОтветитьOut of sheer laziness I discovered that I much prefer flat top, wide low frets much more than an actual crown. Strange because I can hear tuning and intonation discrepencies within a cent or two but I don't seem to have those issues with flat top frets. I'm also an electrician so I prefer the lower frets with #11 strings or else my grip will put everything sharp. Fun stuff.
ОтветитьGreat work and thanx for sharing! The first electric guitar I ever played was a Les Paul jr. way back in 1968! My cousins had found one in a bunch of junk somebody had set out by the road after cleaning out their flooded basement. My uncle cleaned up the jr. and waved a magic wand over the Marshall 18-watt they also pulled out of the pile. We were banished to the pole barn after a few too many poorly and loudly executed attempts at various rock and roll songs of the day.
Ответить... but, you're giving away all your secrets!! 🙂
ОтветитьI had a 64 sg Jr that was kind of a freless wonder. Super worn frets, but everyone loved the feel.
ОтветитьDoes fish glue even adhere to the metal of the fret? Shouldn't I use super glue instead?
Ответить🍒
ОтветитьGotta cheap neck to practice on before trying my first refret on a 2020(yes,2020) Epi SG special. Great guitar if you hardwire the electronics. Awfully soft frets.
ОтветитьWhat else do you use instead of boiled linseed oil? Or do you not use anything?
ОтветитьMy first decent electric guitar was an accurate black beauty knockoff with miniscule frets. I absolutely loved it.
ОтветитьNailed it. Great content
ОтветитьTed, you are a master craftsman sir! Thank you for your consistently excellent videos.
ОтветитьThat fret clamp must be my favorite thing on these videos. It always hurts my head, when they show professional (luthiers or factory people) hammer frets in with a brass mallet and "Oops, dent..." :)
ОтветитьYou used the verb "effect" correctly?!! Subscribed.
ОтветитьThis is a much needed video thank you ted just finished my evo refret its hard to find now
ОтветитьWhen you install the frets at the body, how are you achieving a press in that area? Or are you hammering them in only?
ОтветитьSo did using the "compression fit fretting" around the 12th fret area take the dip out of the neck? Thanks for all your instructions videos.
ОтветитьToo much info!
ОтветитьHeavier the strings the thinner the sound
ОтветитьDude your intelligent
ОтветитьYour opening my mind
ОтветитьLutherie packed, lots of fine details that most of us appreciate. You know how a number can become infinitely smaller by adding a zero after the decimal point? Would you one day drill down to your fret polishing polishing polishing method of work, tools and sequences? It's not rocket science, but we'll take @twoodfrd Ted Science any day.
ОтветитьDid you make the Fret crimper pliers you are using yourself?
ОтветитьSeeing what Mandolin wire looks like, it blows my mind that Lee Sklar uses it. I believe he has it on his Dingwall 5 string w fanned frets too.
ОтветитьGet hung up on some "shmutz"? LOL. I ordered the channel lock 357's Thanks again. You are my guitar repair hero.
ОтветитьA joy to watch
Kudos from Brisbane
One of the best fretting videos ive seen as everything is well explained rather than simply videoing a refret
ОтветитьI have been usuing the fret press and fret bender from ontario. Quality tools at a very fair price.
ОтветитьI wonder if sanding the radius of that fret board would help
ОтветитьIs there any other word that exemplifies fret juice more than "schmutz"?
ОтветитьJescar fretwire, evo gold and their stainless steel wire in my opinion, is the best ive worked with, hosco do a phosphor bronze wire,,good wire but oxides quickly,,very hard wearing,,hosco stainless Steel fretwire very very good,on par with jescar
ОтветитьWhat brand of fish glue?
ОтветитьAs a 3 string cigar guitar builder past three years I stumbled upon your fretting wisdom and Thank You from Tucson Arizona for sharing your meticulously crafted video and loved the fret rocker insert. I make own necks and fret my soundboards. The diagrams were helpful because I am a visual learner. I subscribed to your channel.
ОтветитьI've been reading everything I can on frets for a build. Should have started with you, so much clearer and thorough. A repair perspective is maker advice plus rich insight into what can go wrong, a host of techniques and problem solving. Such a friendly and reasoned presentation every time.
ОтветитьI really appreciate that you noted the advantages of low frets, and that Les Paul was a fan.
Often-overlooked information!
The jumbo fret trend appears to me to have heralded an era of bad intonation (fretting the string too hard and bending a note a few cents sharp is almost inevitable with jumbo frets), more string noise when changing positions, and necks that feel artificially thicker (due to jumbo fret height).
I swear that with thicker strings (11s) and lower frets, you get just as much pitch bend, and more control over pitch, and don't have to change strings as often! Not to mention better signal-to-60-cycle-hum ratio with the louder strings.
I'd be willing to bet it's a huge part of the reason people love the sound of older guitars. Great intonation... chords that ring out like well-tuned pianos...
Les knew his stuff.
Save a fish! Use less glue!🐟
ОтветитьHow much does it usually cost for a refret? I have a coup guitars that need it but I was thinking of doin it myself, only it’ll be my 1st time if I do..
ОтветитьThank you so much for sharing all these gems with us! I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I aspire to building and repairing my own guitars in the future!
ОтветитьThis is a wonderful video. When you crown with a 3 corner file, does it leave the crown as having angles down to the sides of the fret, instead of round? LIke a hexagon vs. oval? Do you have to do anything to soften that transition?
Ответитьanother great video! Thanks my friend
ОтветитьWhoa! I have to get me a guitar with a p90 in it
Ответить152's are my favorite wire! I put 148's on my 335. Had to level quite a bit and it's sitting at 0.034 - 0.036", the jury is still out on it. With a light playing touch, it feels great up and down the neck. But bends are more difficult. Not sure I want to trade how easy it is to cord for big bends...
ОтветитьMisread the tittle as “fretting to death” and clicked immediately 😂
ОтветитьVery informative. Thanks Ted.
ОтветитьA better than usual video from the man who always produces the best ever instruction.
