So how do you price a job when you dont know the time required to scribe and how many scribes will be needed ?????

That's pretty much how we install scribed base. We free hand on a table saw but I do use a small belt sander hooked up to my small vacuum. I set the angle the table saw a bit more than 5°. If I had a nickel for every foot of floor protection I had to move to scribe base I'd be a billionaire.

Thanks for the great video Spencer. When not using shoe what is the reason for doing other trim like doors and casing before flooring instead of doing doors, case and base all after the finish flooring?

I use a jigsaw when scribing to hardwood floor. I put the piece in place, mark my scribe line, cut near the line with a jigsaw, then sand up to, and split the scribe-line with a Festool sander. Works well for me. Also worth mentioning, I find the largest gap between the bottom of the base and the floor, and factor that space into my scribing. Nothing is worse than scribing your first piece, only to find that your next piece is to short because of a rise/fall in the flooring. Great vid!

Coping is unnecessary. Simply 45 into the corners, well actually a little less so the front is tight.

You should wear eye protection. It only takes one splinter or piece to ruin your eyes for life. Your youth is showing here. Take it from an old dog, protect your eyes! Once they’re gone, that’s it.

Never scribe base. Always make the flooring guys fix their uneven floor. Sure its ultimately the concrete guys or framers who f'd up the slab but the flooring guys should have put self leveler to fix the issue with the floor. I know this guy does good work and it will ultimately look good, but anyone who does this isnt fixing the issue they are just hiding it. That being said ive seen the horrors of new builds and i know about the time restraints and low pay to the subs. Which is the main reason for the poor quality of new builds. Either way im not trying to knock this guy i know his work is good. Just my 2 cents for free.

It takes so much more time. As a painter i have to spray it first. 1 coat sprayed and wiped with a brush so it touches up well. 1 more coat spray to get 100% coversge feom the brush on 1st coat. Dried. Stored and double handed. Then after walls have 2 coats you have to come back caulk and putty and paint again.

I understand scribing the bottom of the baseboard to fit tight to the floor makes a clean look, but in my opinion baseboard needs shoe molding or quarter round. I think it looks incomplete without it

Same thing I do, just a quick tip - when you freehand cut thin pieces off baseboards sometimes you have a lot of small pieces breaking off flying and you overall can get a lot of dust and splinters if you don't have a vacuum because breaker on the job site can't handle both at the same time or it doesn't have enough pull you can get a small fan to run next to you against the blade, it will keep everything flying away from infront of you and makes line visibly crisp and no pieces to annoy or to get in your eyes.

OK, most of the guys weighing in are trim carpenters. Homeowner here. I specifically asked my builder and I was adamant. I was not going to do shoe molding in my home. It is a custom home. It is my dream home and I’m not rich by any stretch, but it was just something I was adamant on.
I’m a pretty good amateur woodworker so I’m not completely ignorant, but I had no idea why he really was not happy with me. I paid for it and it was definitely extra, but it was worth it. I talked to the trim carpenter and he said it added a good solid three days on the project.
To me it just screams professionalism. But as one guy commented everybody wants it, but they’re not willing to pay for it. Quite frankly that’s BS never rip off a sub and their expertise. Pay accordingly or don’t do it.

nice tips, i use the same brand scriber but i use the razor scribe version. generally i don't like free handing on the table saw, i find it unnecessarily risky. i use a grinder to just abrade it right up to my razor line, when you get it right youll just break off at that line and you can go back with sand paper and get it perfect.

I see that you use segmented poplar for most of your trim. Does it paint well? In some applications we Would 45 degree bevel rip the bottom so that you can block plane easier or even hand sand that scribe. Great job on the video!

What about scribing to the wall?
Another Vancouver trim carpenter here.
I was wondering: What do you do when the wall is out of plumb? This keeps coming up with older renovations. Over a longer run, especially along hallways, it’s very noticeable if baseboard is snaking in and out by 1/8”, 1/4”, or 3/8”. I was taught to angle the baseboard in towards the wall to minimise the gap. But is this the best solution? Or is there a better way? How will this affect the way two pieces of baseboard meet each other at a 90 degree corner? And how much is it the drywaller’s responsibility to feather the gap between the baseboard and the wall?

I scribe all my base and tack it to the wall with laser level all the way around the room. And then clamp to a work station then use a power plane and dust extractor. To back cut and trim the waste, takes a bit to get used to but you can move some wood. Best part is it's all level when finished. Helps keep everything square and easier to continue with paneling on walls

We used masonite over rosin paper. You ain't dropping anything that'll go through that and you can reuse the masonite on other jobs when you're done with that one. We also used that big white rolls of fluffy one side sticks to the floor with no residue during removal and the other side has a waterproof barrier for paint and mud and stuff. Your videos are cool.
Thank you.

“Astutely” that’s the word your looking for. Resting your hand on the front of the table saw allows you to astutely cut the scribe!…..1 thing I’ve noticed doing this is that if your board support is a roller; if it is not tooling perfectly parallel to the saw (or if your moving the board side to side, like when your scribing) it end up influencing your cut

I actually use the DeWalt atomic saw to cut scribes, you can move the blade guide on it so you can move it to cut right under the line and it's pretty accurate, I just put the Diablo 4½ 36 teeth blade.

I live and work in southern New England and here shoemold doesn’t touch anything but a flip or an oops. Usually here baseboard is being installed after floor install but before floor finish. If you’re lucky you’ll get a perimeter sand before base but that’s it. Things are changing more to all engineered floors which helps but it’s not rare to see an 8” character grade white oak which is not fun to scribe too.

Curious Spence why the blade on the table saw is set so high. Even with the 5 degree bevel seems it could be set down another inch for sure. Safety wise…. On your fingers and even less pull on the material.
