*Many Years Have I Travelled*
By Edward Duffy

Many years have I travelled
Far across the sea,
And every New Year’s Day
Is but another day to me.

Every day I grow older,
But Margaret I long to be,
With you and our dear children
In Dun Laoghaire by the sea.

Oh please, God the day will come
When we will never part,
I pray each day while I’m away
That God will give us heart
To raise our little family
That we planned from the start.

In memory of my great grandfather Edward Duffy. He was a merchant seaman for most of his life, and was at sea during WWII. He was away from his loving wife Margaret and 10 children for sometimes years at a time, much to his regret. This poem was sent in a telegram around Christmas, 1948. It was kept for many years, and was memorized by my grandmother. Eventually he retired and returned to his home at 8 Eden Villas, Glasthule, Ireland. He once remarked that if he ever wrote his life story, the title would be “A Misused Life.” He lived to see several of his children marry. After suffering from several work related illnesses, he died on April 10, 1962 at the age of 55. Far too young…
