I do these as a finisher after lateral raises with light weight. Helped with my shoulder pain a lot.

This doesn'take any sense
It won't be as effective as dumbbells because plate's requirs and takes lots of energy to hold with your fingers, therefore static energy steals focus from delts
When U hold dumbbells it's more comfortable and most of the focus goes to the delts

Every time I see anyone else trying these, aside from Liu himself, they’re not doing it the same way as him. Notice how he starts with the plates in front with a slight hip bend and brings them up and straight back. Everyone else you see in these videos doing it are doing a more circular motion without bringing them from front to back

The minor detail he left out is that traditional side lateral raises only target the lateral head, whereas Lu raises will target all 3 deltoid heads and the upper back.

Is the hip movement necessary or is it due to the size of the plates? If im using dumbells should i replicate the hip and shoulder rounding or should i stay strictly upright?

I do ballet, these help me a lot because the lifts in ballet are very simlar to the snatch and you need to lock your arms overhead while lifting a 55-60 kg ballerina.

If you look at lu's back during the movement, his right scapular seems to lose control when moving overhead from shoulder height onwards, compared to his left side, just shows even these professions with all this practice, still have weak points and activation and control issues.
