Ray Mears - How to sharpen a knife at camp, Bushcraft Survival

Well, I just added more weight to my bug out bag. NOT!! who brings stones camping ? Anyway, the back of another knife will do in a pinch....
Don't understand all your equipment you brought camping.... but I don't have to understand everything...

I will die when I die, don't want to live forever anyway, I will not kneel....

Is this for real? Bushcraft notion of 'survival' makes me wonder what century we live in. What are we surviving against? Bringing all this gear in the woods "at camp" is like a fisherman bringing his own fish and recliner to the lake. I honestly thought he was going to show us how to chose a flat piece of slate or shale to make an impromptu sharpener for the next time i need to 'survive' outdoors.

Please could you tell me where these stones grow in the wild I have looked everywhere!

Basically if you can’t be bothered to sharpen your knifes at home before setting out, just lug along 5 lb of sharpening equipment ; unless you are on a months long expedition obviously, in which case the title was don’t forget to pack sharpening tools.

I've tried sharpening my knife once. It came out worse than it was going in.

who the hell carries whet stones with them to a camp

At camp ? If that's the kit you bring just to sharpen a knife then I assume he has a big vehicle and trailer to bring all his gear to camp ! If I bring a chair I figure it's glamping.

Because we all go camping with all that equipment 🤷🏼‍♂️

AHH Yessss... Sharpening my Opinel on the Landrover while 'Roughing it' out in the wild. Yup.....Know the feeling!

Just when you thought he was done sharpening, he gets his belt out to remove the burr.
Just when you thought he was done with de-burring, he takes the knife to your car's window!

I always take a wash basin, 10 x stones, a huge aluminium box, 20ltr of pure Highland clear spring water and an ol' rusty jeep door when i'm out in the woods to sharpen me knife. Me, i'm easy going but the wifes starting to complain of backache. One day i'll give her a hand to carry it if she stops nagging. Cheers Ray.

You need to be back on the TV Ray! You're missed, in an age of nonsense TV that has no soul....

Since my knives don't have such prominent bevels its a lot harder to get a consistent angle. Compounded further if you have a curved blade as you have to try to rotate the knife so that the movement is always perpendicular to the tangent of the point of contact with the stone, while also maintaining a constant angle of attack. In short, you need a lot of practice to build up the muscle memory to sharpen a knife this way.

A damp teacloth or similar is a great alternative to the stone clamp.

Anyone else notice that the 6000 grit stone is in fact a G-1 which is an 8000 grit ?

For some reason I've never got sharpening right. After watching this and putting some of these techniques to practice my edge sharpening has improved a ton! Still got a way to go but very glad found this. Growing (still living as adult) poor conditions I couldn't afford gear and often felt bad about it so I didn't really go outdoors so ray mears is ani aspiration to me. Now as an adult I don't get down about what I don't have I remember ray demonstrating ancient people success in nature. Love all rays videos and shows!

Good video but that is about the slowest technique you can do. But it is good for beginner to get the movement down.

So... bring a ton of specialized heavy sharpening stones. Maybe I just don't understand bushcraft.

All these folks these days are so obsessed with 0degree scandi with no micro bevel. But here’s proof that even the pros use a micro bevel.

After the window stropping I like to go one step further and bum a ride with nasa to outer space go to the nearest neutron star and use the hard exterior of the star to give it I good edge
