Not too many make it to 4 1/2 around here. I'm trying to hold out for 120"+ but its not easy with all the gorgeous 2 yr olds running around. Taken 3 yr olds the last 4 years, though.

I shot a huge 9 point buck recently but his antlers were small compared to his body. A buddy said he was a 2.5 year old but im not too sure now

Every buck is different, most bucks yes but not all bucks will reach maximum size at 6.5, some top off at 4.5 others at 8.5. It comes down to the physical health and nutrition of the individual buck that will ultimately decide his rack.

From what I've seen, between 4.5 - 8.5 are a buck's golden years. I think hunters too often split hairs of deer being at their biggest whether it's 5.5 or 6.5 or 7.5. The difference between a buck being 160 and 165 should not affect your hunt at all

So at what age is best to kill a deer for meat and not for a rack?

As a subsistence only hunter trophy hunters are the scum of the earth.

As a kid I thought that automatically the older the deer the bigger the rack always lol....but I've seen some big old looking deer with a big 3 point rack but the deer looks far older than most 3 pints in the area...I've started wondering of some deer just cap off at a certain age or start regressing...I guess this answers that lol

This was a topic that we have discussed between our hunting party. I was dead set that a whitetail will show little difference in it's antler size at the age of 51/2 in comparison to a 61/2 yr old.
Outstanding narration and do keep up the great work!!

Actually 7 years is the Max growth. We’ve raised White tail, Mile deer, Fallow deer and Elk for the last 28 years for hunting, breeding and meat. The younger males taste a lot better.
