Kashihara is the site of the founding of Japan in the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan), which is considered to be the oldest authentic history of Japan. Kamu Yamato Iwarebiko no Mikoto (later Emperor Jinmu), a descendant of Amaterasu no Mikoto, was the founder of Japan. He headed east from his palace in Takachiho, Kyushu, with the aim of creating a prosperous and peaceful country. Overcoming unimaginable hardships, he founded the Kashihara Palace at the southeastern foot of Mount Unebiyama. He ascended to the throne as the first emperor in the first year of the second millennium A.D., some 2,600 years ago. Kashihara is the cradle of Japanese history and culture.
