I am using Fedora Gnome on Laptop and KDE on desktop, so I think there are good things about both. But in my opinion, Gnome has better touchpad integration and gestures, while KDE for me, suits a traditional Mouse-Based interaction better. Since both DEs are widely used, I think this upgrade of KDE to Edition status would be a good move, after the issues you named are resolved. But this resolvement should be done first. So I would not mind to wait for another one or two releases, if there are less possible problems then.
ОтветитьThat’s a good. To begin with because alternative is always a plus, moreover because Gnome is a strange way to use a desktop and on top of it they want it their way or none. I’d rather use something that can compromise.
ОтветитьDamn, Love KDE Plasma but completely out of touch with all these minutia. Only interested in how to VNC into another laptop with the same (wayland) Plasma desktop. Impossible. Or I'm just stupid. Or both... if anyone has an idea pls help...
ОтветитьAs a Fedora KDE user I'm very excited.
ОтветитьI know this is completely off-topic, but I feel like it would be interesting to cover opensuse again at some point.
From what I remember they're going through changes recently, but how is that going ?
I often heard of it as the "best rolling release" yet it's never talked about on channels like yours, this is very disorienting.
With more and more popping up, seeing a comparison of atomic distributions and the technologies behind them in the coming months would be very interesting, too.
its so gnover
ОтветитьI don't see myself using something else than Gnome on laptops and KDE on desktops.
ОтветитьYes I am using Fedora KDE! Both at home and at work!
Ответитьi like gnome because it doesnt remind me of windows and is very refreshing but im suprised kde is just considered a spin when its one of the most popular distro/de combos ever, glad to see this even if i prefer gnome
ОтветитьFedora Desktop G edition
Fedora Desktop K edition
Listen, I'm a happy primary KDE user, but calling it more stable, understandable or not breakable for the average user than Gnome, is just a lie. Gnome has only very few buttons that need understanding, and is fairly close to what macOS will offer as a standard experience. Without delving much deeper you're not going to brick it through the settings. In KDE on the other hand, accidentally deleting your main taskbar is just 3 clicks away. That is partially why I like it, it can be themed and configured beyond anything reasonable very easily, but it is hardly beginner friendly in that way.
I have several older family members who just want a browser, an email client and a printer, and were willing to give Linux a shot if I explain it to them, rather than to buy new hardware for Windows 11. Gnome is easy to explain to them, and they will not come back for complaints, KDE is not, I have tried both. Again saying that as a happy KDE user myself.
I use Aurora DX which is basically Atomic Fedora KDE with some great stuff included that makes it a better out of box experience. I reaaly love the look of Gnome, but using it kind of frustrates me, I guess I just don't fit in with its paradigm. So KDE for me. Always open to give Gnome another shot though.
ОтветитьAh... KDE. Back in the 00s, it was the most advanced desktop environment. The network transparrency was like science fiction! These days, KDE apps are feature-full and serious (Krita, Kdenlive, Kate, etc.) and the desktop organization is "out of this world".
ОтветитьIf I have Fedora KDE SIG to thank for Fedora Kinoite then thank you! It's such a great tool!
ОтветитьI don't use KDE but I'm glad to see its picking up steam. From conversations with non-superusers it seems like KDE comes with a UX that is very quick and easy to pick up.
ОтветитьYep REAL WOKE and alive with mental illness!
ОтветитьI DON'T LIKE GNOME MAN,IT MAKES ME DIZZY MAN,TO THE POINT OF THROWING UP MY LUNCH,MAAAAAAAAN.......
ОтветитьOne suggestion is to name it something like Desktop Edition since it's closer to what users expect from a desktop OS.
ОтветитьWhy not just let OpenSUSE do KDE and fedora do Gnome? So then we can tell people it is either OpenSUSE,Fedora or Mint as choices for entry to the linux ecosystem?
ОтветитьFedora???? I love Air Freidora
ОтветитьMy main browser is Firefox, but there is some company sites I need to access that doesn't work very well on Fidefox due to its engine. Then, in this cases, I use Falkon that works fine with a plus to be a lightweight browser
ОтветитьSo glad to see more and more people finally putting GNOME in its place - the fucking DUMPSTER where it should've never gotten out of since 3.x. 90+% of the market share adpots the Windows (KDE) workflow, not the Apple (GNOME) one which has always been a niche for the elitists, nothing more. KDE should've been the standard on Linux overall since last decade, not... whatever the FUCK GNOME (double meaning on purpose) has defiled itself into nowadays. Basic market share logic, you pursue the larger slice of the pie, ideological ramblings about "we know UI/UX better than you and our choices are the best" be fucking damned - the MARKET decides that, not YOU, GNOME.
You know the saying - justice is a leftover best served when re-heated on the microwave. I'll be happily eating mine and licking the plate 👍
I hate this as a GNOME user
ОтветитьI enjoyed the "Return to form" reference XD
Ответитьwill wayland finally be in a usable state?...
ОтветитьI thought Gnome only existed to make all other linux desktops look good?
ОтветитьI surely do hope you dont mean that this is a 'return to form' exactly in the same way as Veilguard was.
Because, you know, it wasnt.
What difference does it make if KDE is a spin or an “official” version? I feel like everything talked about in this video is completely pointless.
ОтветитьThey should really rename workstation to "workstation gnome" and then add "workstation KDE" or "desktop gnome" and "desktop KDE" but whatever they do it should be consistent. Anything else is just pedantic bike shedding.
ОтветитьIts about time... Fedora KDE is great
ОтветитьI actually tried out Falkon again recently, and I really want to like it. I love that it uses my system QT6 theme, and hardware acceleration actually works under Wayland on my Nvidia laptop, unlike any chromium browser.
The deal-breaker for me is the pitiful selection of plugins for any browser using QT webengine. If there were Bitwarden and Vimium plug-ins for Falkon, I would happily daily drive it.
Good cop, bad cop. Glad that it worked! Maybe soon is time to actually try Fedora KDE.
Hopefully Gnome now not being the default (or not the only default) will make more users try KDE, love it, and speed KDE's development.
I use Fedora since F19 ish and as a Gnome user never understood why Plasma or even better, Cinnamon wasn't/isn't the main one. Nowadways I divide my time between Gnome and Hyprland, KDE/Plasma had to many problems in continuous usage.
ОтветитьWhenever I would install a Linux (Ubuntu, usually, but that's neither here nor there), I would have to use GNOME rather than KDE mainly because back then I would be running lower-spec graphics (usually Intel integrated, otherwise extremely old NVidia) and I knew that all the graphics compositing defaults would work fine on GNOME and I wouldn't have to put nearly as much effort worrying about even simple things like monitor resolution as if I were using a non-default desktop like KDE back then. I've always preferred the looks and apps of KDE, however, and if KDE becomes a default for even one main Linux I would genuinely consider using that Linux as my go-to for future Linux installs.
ОтветитьFedora Mate will be called WorMstation?
ОтветитьFedora Gnome will be renamed to Fedora Playstation and will be on a 6 - 7 year release cycle.
ОтветитьIs that a Gabi Belle mousepad I spot?
Nice
i don't want being annoying but stop saying that fedora is point release, its semi-rolling release
ОтветитьSeems like a lot of hype for a simple 'sudo dnf group install "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"'
ОтветитьPosting this comment from Falkon. I also sometimes use Zen, so I'm weird. I mostly sit in Plasma -> Konsole -> Zellij -> bash or Plasma -> Dolphin -> bash, but I like that KDE layer for the same reason I sit in a terminal, because I can script it to exactly what I want. I went CDE->KDE->ion3+KDE->i3+KDE->KDE (with some Sun/Solaris and AIX defaults tossed in), but I have scripts that go back nearly 40 years at this point, completely rewritten like the Ship of Theseus.
ОтветитьFedora 41 KDE Plasma IS SO GOOD. I’ve tried Linux before but felt it was not ready for mainstream use. The app store, and settings app are flawless. I don’t need to use a terminal for anything. The task bar is a beautiful windows 10 like experience. CONS: KDE or apps without menu bars work best. You will have to switch from GIMP to Krita.
Ответитьkde is good event they kwrite realy impress me wow you can hope kwrite can put plugin like nvim
Ответитьgnome just looks more modern, kde looks like windows vista to me :/
ОтветитьInteresting proposal, switching to linux from windows might get a bit friendlier from those who get Fedora as their first distro, especially for those which don't know that spins exist :)))
ОтветитьIt seems that fedora has no problem at all that they want to create their own problems, I don't get it just because it looks more like Windows and it have more options on the settings app isn't enough of a reason to make this decision.
This decision is a really bad decision and the worst part of it is that they never looked at the user's of the workstation, many people love GNOME and prefer it over to KDE but no lets ignore these people but instead let's look at the random arch user that probably are using hyperland and no and although GNOME is easier to understand and gets along with it then KDE because there is no billion setting that you have to go through and see what to do with it, although GNOME is more popular although GNOME has many things that make it a better option for many people that use it and love it no, I have a problem with the GNOME developers, I can do whatever I want, lets just go ahead and replace GNOME with KDE even though no one is going to be happy about it except me and other few people and no no I don't care about anyone else. I really hate this, both GNOME and KDE are amazing desktop environments but once this s*** happened, things start to go down, you really just want to promote KDE more? you should promote all the other spins as well this isn't fair nothing is fair you guys are f***
Brodie I am a young hottie from the UK. I just can't stop watching your vids. It has become an addiction. I want to bring it to the next level and meet you in person. Please respond!
ОтветитьI'm a Fedora KDE Sig member/packager, and we'll get this thing out of the door, and strive for the same standards of quality as we've been doing, and aim for even higher!
