ОтветитьI just passed my adjuster exam and need to know how to get started, I have no job now and need to make money now!
ОтветитьI appreciate your take on IA career. I've been following since A26F. I've always been a staff adjuster for one of the top 10 carriers.
One year I left staff adjusting and became an IA. It was for Hurricane Irma down in Florida. I was a nervous wreck. Before I put my 2 weeks in I contacted one of the IA firms and demanded I had 25 claims to my name. I remembered so vividly when she laughed and told me "in your dreams". She went on to say that she didn't know who I was and what skills I had to bring me on the roster. I quickly went through my resume with her over the phone and told her that I wouldn't let her down and that she would not regret it. She told me to be in Naples in two days and she wanted to meet in person.
I put in my 2weeks in, the company immediately let me go. I went shopping for a truck. Not a new but a used truck just to keep expenses down. I remember my family thinking I was crazy leaving a very good and stable career. I didn't have a personal vehicle since I've always had a company car through the carrier. So I secured this old Dodge PU installed a ladder rack. Oh by the way my brother and father were going to join me and take on claims on their own. These two are licensed electricians and never adjuster before but I told them they could do it and make lots of money. So they each loaded up there own trucks with tanks of gas and fiberglass ladders. My dad had so many extension ladders that I didn't need to buy a ladder. We brought a couple of 24' and 32' fiberglass ladders with us. As I'm driving down to Naples I'm having my wife back home secure a place down in Marco Island. This was a difficult task since Marco Island was like Ground Zero for this Hurricane.
So I make it to Naples meet this CEO of this IA firm. And I bring my resume. Mind you I haven't even subscribed to Xactimate at this point. It didn't even cross my mind because I've been so used to using the company laptop that had Xactimate on it. But she understood. I got my credentials and told her that I would be in Marco Island to handle as many losses as possible. She asked I would train both my brother and father at the same time so they wouldn't have to trek back to the hotel for training. I told her I would do that. Little did I know how much stress this would put on myself. But I agreed and so she gave me 25 claims and told me if I didn't have them done by the end of the week she was going to reassign what was not done and scale me back accordingly.
My wife at home finally secured an AirBnb on Marco Island and he headed there that same night. This place had no damages but neighbors all around were destroyed and had significant damage. This was a single family home 3 bedroom 2 bath with a pool. It was perfect! That morning I started hustling. Looking at the address and putting then on the map from closest to the furthest. And started to make my calls. I told my dad and brother to do the same. She only gave them 10 a piece so something they could manage. I on the other hand had 25 to complete. No time to waste. I finished my calls and scheduling and I was off for inspections. Left home when the sun was down and got home when to moon was out. Quick shower and something to eat. Showed my dad and brother to label photos and start sketching on XM8.
Keeping the story somewhat short...I completed the 25 claims by Thursday. She gave me another 25 claims. and continued to give me more as other adjusters were sent home quickly. When the claims dried up she asked if I could go to Naples and handle residual claims and I said yes. I also signed up with another IA firm when I moved to Naples since it was slow and did some desk adjusting for them. I showed my dad how to desk adjuster for this other carrier since he wasn't getting anymore field claims.
In short within 35day days I personally made $136k from adjusting claims in this short IA stint.
And yes I went back to staff adjusting.
Now I'm leaving staff adjusting after 20yrs and will be doing IA on my own.
But I love all the information you give to adjusters wanting to try their luck on IA. Its all about the hustle, quality of work, and efficiency.
