Goku straight up ended a lot of villains in O.G Dragonball. He never had a problem with the more permanent solution until Z. It was frankly ridiculous for him to try and spare Frieza/Vegeta for any reason. It may have worked out when it came to Vegeta but the same is certainly not true for Frieza whose body count of innocent people is still going up thanks to Goku. The weird thing is neither Roshi nor Grandpa Gohan taught him to act in that manner. In fact the only reason Roshi tried to use a non-lethal attack on king Piccolo was because he couldn't actually beat him. As for early Z Goku trying to spare Raditz. Goku places a deep importance on family, you really do need to watch/read the original Dragonball to understand how important family really is to him. The version of Goku in super who often treats his family like an afterthought is at best a betrayal of his original and even Z characterization.

ok so something i think many people miss with the Freiza fight, when Goku initially was going to let Freiza go,(Before the Death Saucer attack), it wasn't out of mercy. Goku tells Freiza out right, that Freiza isn't worth his time anymore. This is the most cruel thing Goku could have done, making Freiza live knowing that he was spared by another being, a Saiyan, no less a race that Freiza both despised and looked down on, its just that Freiza's pride wouldn't allow for that, and we all know who that turned out.

I actuality, up until Vegeta Goku no qualms about killing people he thought were bad. He slaughtered hundreds of Red Ribben soldiers, he killed Tao Pai Pai, and King Piccolo. The first time he spared a true enemy was when he fought Piccolo Jr. Now he didn't kill P jr because he sensed that there was some good in him and that he wasn't completely irredeemable, however I think he spared Vegeta despite the terrible things he'd done because he felt guilty about killing his brother, not enough to regret it but enough to influence his choice. As for Frieza well Goku has never liked killing and as a SSJ I guess he figured he was strong enough that Frieza was no longer a threat and so he could afford not to kill him though Frieza obviously pushed him to it anyway.

Nay it's android 8. The one that looks like Frankenstein. He taught him that every life is precious, after goku almost end general white life. He just didn't have the occasion cause he fought the red ribbon, then Tenkaichi, then piccolo who killed krullin. And after that was our piccolo that he spared.
