As someone who has been an instructor most of my adult life, both as a supervisor and manager and as a paid professional teacher of many different subjects, including shooting, I absolutely agree with everything you pointed out. Just as someone like a good shooter may believe that he has nothing more to learn, with my background and experience I must try to withhold critical judgments of not only what’s being taught, but how. Nevertheless, as you point out there are good instructors and BAD instructors, and that leads to the practical question of how do we know who they are before attending a class. One class I attended was taught by an instructor whose methods are very controversial and who is regularly reviled on an Internet forum I frequent. I nevertheless thought his training was worth the time and money. Another instructor who had a very good reputation and had even written a book that I read before the class was a terrible teacher: He was so bad that I quit the class the morning of the first day he was teaching. The answers may seem obvious, but do you have any specific tips?

After careers in law enforcement and other disaplines, I have found that a willingness to learn is the key and being able to spit out the bones and keep the meat from many instructors. Use what works for you and disgard the rest. In doing this, you will establish your own ways that work best for you. Good stuff Mike.

Terrific job Mike! Concise, and you covered the fundamentals of education....I am 65' former military' retired. If possible I would like to attend a long range precision school on the east coast. I have very good gear. Can you recommend a class?
