New to Exile, but i heard of them back in the day. But it doesn't take a musical magician to see that that long hair guy was the fuel to this band. Without him, i just hear words or mumble.

i saw them Live as a kid. I was enthralled. Never listened to the words but was in awe of the sound

Jimmy Stokley was the face of the band through it's Soft Rock years. But as the 70's drew to a close, the band's style fell out of favor with record companies.
As the band pursued a new direction, it became apparent that Stokley looked different, sang different, and acted different than all the rest. But the most important factor is that he could not play an instrument yet was in a group full of very capable vocalists.
In the logistics of maintaining a working band, that poses a problem.
It poses a problem in many ways. First, early on, when bands form, usually the arrangement of equal pay for each member just naturally occurs. Once established, that precedent is hard to change. So when you have some members who play instruments and sing too, plus write songs, all for the same pay as one who can't or won't write or learn to play and only offers vocals, resentments build in the group. Throw in the egos that often accompany performers, especially front man lead singers, and you have a recipe for turmoil within the band.
Something eventually must be done to restore harmony. The typical solution is the one chosen by this band.
And no, they didn't fade away after Stokley left. Instead, they flourished. Their signature sound and tightness became even more pronounced. That inspired more creativity which resulted in many successful albums and hit songs through the 80's.
What's more, the band with it's most successful line-up is still touring. My brother and his family saw them just two weeks ago. In their 70's now, they still put on a great show.

From a time when songs had so much emphasis on people's feelings for each other. Maybe this should come back into vogue again as things are not as harmonious!! Exile is incredible art doing this!

What happened to Jimmy IMHO was that the band was directed by their manager to go country. thats where their songwriting for other bands was having success. And Jimmy was not a country music boi.

Jimmy Stokes was born to be a rock star, such natural showmanship and style. Makes me sad to see him not front and center near the end of 1970’s and eventually kicked out for no plausible reason. He basically died of a broken heart.😢
