There are many examples of militaries considering a compact, short-barreled, intermediate-caliber automatic rifle a "submachine gun" rather than a carbine or assault rifle or whatever other designation.
Basically classifying them based on their intended use above all rather than caliber or feature set above all.

Basically, the HK33K and the HK53 came out during a time before the phrase short-barreled rifle or SBR became common terminology.

5.56 hk33/53 probably served most of its combat history (active combat use I mean) in commando units in Turkish gendarmerie between mid 80s up to 2015 against PKK and later against ISIS and YPG in Syria for a short period before being replaced, in very tough and different conditions ranging from desert like conditions, up to 3k+ meters on the mountains down to -30 C's and never heard any real complaints about the weapon. They always had some G3's laying around but HK33 was the most common in commando units (Of the gendarmerie, ground forces preffered G3's and not had HK33 in inventory if i remember correct.). Turkish gendarmerie was actually very fond of the weapon and initial trials to replace it had quite a backlash. Nice system, remember sometimes my father bringing his issued rifle back to home, after he came back from months of operations, around 2009. Cool looking, always looked a bit battered, lots of scrapes, sometimes would inc huge optics (NV/or thermal), quite hefty for an 11 year old at that time lol.

This is a variant of the HK 33, which is the standard issue assault rifle for the Brazilian Airforce.
The only diference of the 33 from the 53 is that the 33 has no collapsible stock.
Just telling a fun fact.

WIsh I had mine back and never moved to NY. I had a Flemming sear married to a 4 pos. trigger pack on a German HK93 reworked into a 53a3 by Terry Dyer in the late 1990's. I had ARM claw mount with a Comp M red dot (still that with only a few times used) and a Beta C that I never ran and sold off with all the 25 and 40 round mags. T. Dyer also made a metal feed tower for the 53...I never tested it before selling it all off and only keeping the Comp M...what a shame. Distinctive sound it makes and was really my favorite....should have put more than the few hundred rounds thru it before selling it and making plans to move here which sucks for any gun type you own. 8.31 inch barrel... I liked my M16a1 when it was running in 9mm the best for controllability. The 53a3 was just impressive in low light...the watermelon sized flash was a show to see and believe! All that and it was only about 6K if that all said and done including the sear. What would it be worth now....don't tell me.
