As always your insights into the Star Wars universe provide great commentary for current events. Thank you for having the courage to bring these issues up when most content creators steer clear of anything that could lose them viewership ❤️

If there just had been some kind of time limit to the emergency power or or a retro-active green-lighting process by the people in power at the time of the emergency decree, after emergency measurements were taken...
Either way, we have our own Palpatine story in real-life now but we'll see if this was just a fleeting idea in hindsight 5 years from now.

Religion and Liberty: Volume 2, Number 6
POWER CORRUPTS
By Ben Moreell
July 20, 2010

Open quote.
When a person gains power over other persons–political power to force other persons to do his bidding when they do not believe it right to do so–it seems inevitable that a moral weakness develops in the person who exercises that power. It may take time for this weakness to become visible. In fact, its full extent is frequently left to the historians to record, but we eventually learn of it. It was Lord Acton, the British historian, who said: “All power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Please do not misunderstand me. These persons who are corrupted by the process of ruling over their fellow men are not innately evil. They begin as honest men. Their motives for wanting to direct the actions of others may be purely patriotic and altruistic. Indeed, they may wish only “to do good for the people.” But, apparently, the only way they can think of to do this “good” is to impose more restrictive laws.

Now, obviously, there is no point in passing a law which requires people to do something they would do anyhow; or which prevents them from doing what they are not going to do anyhow. Therefore, the possessor of the political power could very well decide to leave every person free to do as he pleases so long as he does not infringe upon the same right of every other person to do as he pleases. However, that concept appears to be utterly without reason to a person who wants to exercise political power over his fellow man, for he asks himself: “How can I ‘do good’ for the people if I just leave them alone?” Besides, he does not want to pass into history as a “do nothing” leader who ends up as a footnote somewhere. So he begins to pass laws that will force all other persons to conform to his ideas of what is good for them.

That is the danger point! The more restrictions and compulsions he imposes on other persons, the greater the strain on his own morality. As his appetite for using force against people increases, he tends increasingly to surround himself with advisers who also seem to derive a peculiar pleasure from forcing others to obey their decrees. He appoints friends and supporters to easy jobs of questionable necessity. If there are not enough jobs to go around, he creates new ones. In some instances, jobs are sold to the highest bidder. The hard-earned money of those over whom he rules is loaned for questionable private endeavors or spent on grandiose public projects at home and abroad. If there is opposition, an emergency is declared or created to justify these actions.

If the benevolent ruler stays in power long enough, he eventually concludes that power and wisdom are the same thing. And as he possesses power, he must also possess wisdom. He becomes converted to the seductive thesis that election to public office endows the official with both power and wisdom. At this point, he begins to lose his ability to distinguish between what is morally right and what is politically expedient.
Close quote.

If they--because Lucas doesn't deserve all the credit, I figure we ought not to crown him emperor of something he never could have built alone--weren't channeling Herodotus when they plotted out Palpatine's story, I'll eat my lightsaber.

The pattern is general, yes, but tell me Lucas didn't know his Greek histories. And I'm not just talking 'bout the hummus (hubris)--look up "CBC Ideas: How to become a tyrant in 5 steps", that'll get you a better and more succinct summation than I can provide.

It is fascinating to see the echo chamber on display.
There is one problem with your reasoning... You presume that politicians control thinking.

Palpatine did not manipulate the masses. Palpatine manipulated the senate - the lawyers, nobles, professionals and educated.

The reason palpatine's strategy worked was because of the greed of the senate. While they were certainly cowardly, it was not war they feared but rebellion against their held positions as the mass public favored liberation from the excesses of a corrupt and bloated republic. It wasn't the fears and sensibilities of the common man which were exploited, but the fears of the apparatchiks regarding the general public.

I never wanted power or authority over anyone.

I have held management positions before, and I don't care for the headache that is entailed with having to run around wiping everyone's noses. I'm the hardest working lazy person you will likely ever meet because I don't mind doing the work of three men if it means I get to go back to being lazy and/or alone once my assigned tasks are completed. I've spent years breaking down the ways they corrupted our 3 branches of government and only wanted to point out where the problem was, how to fix it, and then show you how to implement safeguards that would prevent repeats of the same mistakes in the future [because if I can manipulate a system then it's not up to standard yet] .

Along the way I would have shown and reminded you all how the government was really intended to behave because there are non-violent ways of "whipping" our elected officials into shape already available to us already if we could all just stop being so self-righteous and letting them pit us against one another. World Peace was/is literally within our grasp if we wanted and I had made enough global contacts to discover that the rest of the world would back us up just so long as we held up our end of the bargain.

I tried to show you a better way, but all you guys did was spit in my face and call me stupid for honoring my oath to this country and putting the pursuit of y'all freedom ahead of my own interests/personal gains. Y'all think that just because I do what I do, in such an off the cuff manner, that it must be simple.

Well, just because I make it look easy, it doesn't mean that it is. If it was you guys would have done it yourselves and I wouldn't have had to linger around in the shadows, accomplishing all of the things that you were all too busy complaining about to fix; while also running behind you so that I could spot all the obvious signs that you've been missing over the last two years.

If you had just arranged for the congressional hearing like I asked, I might have been able to put things together in a less aggressive manner than what it turned out to be as of late; but you felt like you were morally superior and knew better than me because I didn't bother to pay a small fortune to read the litany of f books that I did, or siphon the eclectic knowledge/hands-on training that I gleaned from life experiences.

I am the literal definition of a highly intelligent, well-read, well-traveled, and cultured individual, who knew more about successfully bending the rules and breaking the law than most law enforcement officers, long before the U.S. Army had me perform my first push-up/trained me in navigating technological, hierarchical, and bureaucratic infrastructures.

You judged me because I'd rather be honest and not lie about the proverbial the dirt beneath my fingernails and willingly lend a helping hand without want for anything in return. You think your method of practicing Christianity/etc is morally superior to mine because I spent decades studying my bible in private and focused on retaining the moral/philosophical comprehension found within, as opposed to virtue signaling about going to church and memorizing a bunch of quotes just for the sake of grand standing.

All I asked for was that you provide me with a "decoder" and stop making me jump through hoops, in regards to our communications; when you knew good and d@mned well that I was sincerely trying to help and also busy doing charitable labor and/or continuing the elaborately extensive research that makes the seemingly implausible predictions/assessments possible. Then after that I am forced to painstakingly spoon-feed to all of these complex notions/solutions to people who expect me to do all of their homework for them; and then explain why I am right and how it's done before they will bother to stop arguing with me about topics they only have a cursory understanding of, at best.

Instead of getting help, I get bombarded with coded messages, that i have no baseline for understanding, and told that I should just be patient because the blatant disrespect and invasion of privacy I have been/need to continue enduring will be worth the pay off that it is awaiting me in the end; even after i made it repetitiously clear that I was not seekingi out money, fame, or accolades for my hard work.

But did you guys and gals ever bother to consider this:

What made you think that someone, whom you teased, tortured, and ridiculed, would want or trust anything that was derived as a result of working with people that treat others in such a manner; or that they would stick around and hang in there until the end with dishonest and conniving people like you???

And you got the nerve to think I'm the arrogant one in this scenario of ours??? ( LoL KeK LoL)

And before anyone says “Don’t compare Star Wars with IRL politics”, the OG Trilogy was a commentary on the Vietnam War and American imperialism and the prequels literally is about of democracy becoming a dictatorship from within because of engineered fear and outrage. Please educate yourself before claiming something called Star WARS created by the VERY LIBERAL George is somehow DOESN’T have political messages and themes.

He was essentially turning the Empire into a neo-feudal state. The Governors and Moffs would run their own little fiefdoms as they saw fit but in exchange had to provide Palpatine with everything he wanted from them. Ministries like ISB would also run as their own independent mini-kingdoms. As long as you can keep the lords in control, the system is much easier to govern. Of course, in the long run a bad governor would run the system into the ground and then loot if for everything to fulfill the obligations to the Empire.
