The Martian atmosphere is way thinner than shown when he's putting the tarp on, and that was known when the book was written and the film made. Frankly, no roof at all would be required the spacesuit is enough. But then, the entire Ares III leaving Watney due to the storm is impossible given how thin the Martian atmosphere is anyway. For a book and film that claim accurate science this atmosphere stuff is a major mistake.

It this were real and actually happened the video of the astronaut video logs would make a great movie in its self!

After looking at all the comments about the wind issue, I decided to run some calculations. Wind force is proportional to air density times the square of the wind speed. Average surface air density is about 0.02 kg/m^3 on Mars, about 1.225 kg/m^3 on Earth. Wind speeds in the strongest Martian storms peak at about 60 MPH, so if you solve for an equal wind force the equivalent wind needed on Earth is about 7.7 MPH. So whoever said the strongest Martian storm would have same direct wind effect as a light breeze on Earth was exactly correct. The real issue would be the dust, which gets electrostatically charged and clings to everything.

It's funny to think that if this where to have happened in real life Mark Watney would have turned into some mythical hero figure after a couple thousand years like figures from Earth's past.

As a 17 year old high school student pursuing engineering. This is one of my favorite movies because it shows teamwork and problem solving at its finest and it shows how engineers think.

This scene spoiled the entire movie for me.

Judging by what I managed to find out about our species in my however short life, I am pretty sure this is exactly what will happen AT LEAST once. Lot more than once, most probably. Our history has been, sadly, literally filled with this kind of bullshit, where day was saved by flying by the seat of one's pants and making up stuff as it came up. And, by being sufficiently crazy to actually do it in first place. Fun, though🤣🤣🤣
