Engineers should be required to work as a mechanic doing maintenance and repairs on vehicles that engineers designed for a minimum of 5 years before they are ever allowed to design anything.

The factory builds the cars the way the engineers designed it. The engineers are always to blame. That bolt is what they make liquid wrenches for. They can also be used to make an access hole so you can remove the bolt from the other side of the frame with a socket and ratchet.

I owned a Jeep Wrangler from 2006 when purchased new to 2023 when I traded her in for a new Explorer. The only major problems I had with her were electrical,: I had to replace the battery every 5 years on the nose, you could set a clock by it. Another problem I had which was the only real major problem was that the alternator blew and took the computer with it. There were also other age related problems that started to appear. The reason I chose Ford was I test drove one and that was all she wrote, I had to have one. The other reason is because I'm getting older and lifting my leg up to get in the Jeep was a bit much for me anymore. I love my Explorer though.

I can say one thing I absolutely hated about the Jeep was when you would get gas. The gas cap didn't have a flange in the neck of the tank so when the gas would get to the top, it would splash everywhere. You would have it on you and the car, also the cost, so furstrating.

Yeah I've had a few operators give us a talk about our designs. But I mean there are different sectors of engineering and sometimes we have to compromise on designs. Also designing things to be maintained is something I always do. Everything I designed at work I made to be easily serviceable. Idk, I haven't really seen an engineer not think about replaceable parts or maintenance...

Ooh oooh I got another one. Disclaimer: I fucking hate working on VW shit, straight trash imo. The example: 2014 GTI 2.0T.... And it's not just that year and that car, just my only experience with this engine..... How about 5.5 hour labor time 2 replace the, wait for it..... The fucking valve cover gasket. Why? Oh because they decided to make the valve cover and the camshaft caps 1 whole integrated unit, so that to do the job the way it was designed means pulling the fucking timing chains off. 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️. Can be done without removing the chains, but that is just ridiculous 2 engineer it that way. Face slaps are deserved on that bullshit.

Or hey Ford, how about on the F-150s with the coyote engine where the sway bar is so perfectly imperfectly located that the oil drain stream has only one path.... Right onto the sway bar and then everywhere but into the oil caddy. Easy solution is to just unbolt the sway bar bushing caps and let the bar hang, but I mean, c'mon, really?? How in the hell did that get overlooked in design? I get that sometimes it's out of the engineer's hands, but this particular case is just an awful oversight at the engineering level.

Gotta love newer Ram 1500s where the oil filter sits directly above the electric power steering rack module assemby and connectors so that without using a form-a-funnel or the like, the steering rack and control module connectors get a nice hot oil bath every time. So cool.

I recently replaced the aux belt tensioner in a 2022 Kuga 2.0 diesel. It had two bolts holding it on, both right next to a piece of chassis. Had to raise the engine to get the top one out and then lower it to get the bottom one out.
Changing an aux belt tensioner in most cars is a 20 min job. This took 3 hours (mostly just looking at it wondering how the fuck to do it 😅).

First clip is people just not looking enough.. in order to remove the tensioner bolt, that bolt is also the alternator bolt, you have to remove all alternation bolts and tilt the alt so you can take that tensioner bolt out lol

Sometimes the problem is purchasing. If we buy a 1.5" bolt instead of 1.25" we save $0.001 per bolt and I get $$$ bonus, no need to check with engineering all specs are the same just a little longer.

what do they mean when they say that "you don't get paid for the extra time you spend to go out of your way to do something"

Don't you have labor costs that are billed per hour in the US ? In Europe you pay parts + the time that it took the mechanic to do the job - or is the time estimated in the beginning and then cant be changed ?

I've had a situation where some AC fan component was rattling around in the vents and the mechanic said that it's not worth taking it out because they'd have to remove the entire dashboard and that would cost me lot in labor

The car leaking, y'all are crazy, aint no way in hell a dealer is going to just toss someone a new car. They're going to bullshit around and try to "fix" at it. And then put it off and "wait and see" and jerk the customer around forever before they put them in a new car. Salespeople would have to be involved and those f'ers are almost as bad as the jackass engineers that make this stupid crap.
