Demon Sui

“Why should we give red packets to children, even the wealthy ones? Don’t they already have everything they need and want?” Giving red packets to children is a gesture of giving them blessing, good luck and to keep them out of harm’s way.

Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days, up until the Lantern Festival. Hence, the celebration and fun seem delightfully longer than other celebrations. Each year, a Chinese zodiac animal will be the symbol for the year. It is the Lucky Ox’s turn for 2021.

The legend goes like this. Apart from the famous legend monster Nian, there was also another demon named Sui terrifying all the children when they were asleep. Children who were touched by demon Sui would suffer from terrible fever, shock or become mentally unstable. Later, they found out that keeping them awake would keep them safe from demon Sui, up until they realized giving red packets to children to keep them awake, and also to keep them safe.  The rest is history.

Here are 3 ways to give blessings to kids:

Give red packets

Keep them safe

Teach them customs and traditions

Nowadays, if you are married, you will give red packets as blessings to all the children whom you have met during the first few days of Chinese New Year. So, stay safe and keep the children safe by giving your blessings in the form of red packets, will you?
