This is the conference given at the Space Physiology Symposium of Panam2019 in Varadero, Cuba on June 1, 2019. Prof. Dr. Gustavo Zubieta-Calleja, a Bolivian scientist, explains the advantages of reducing the pressure within spaceships, but maintaining the 20.9 % oxygen fraction, because that constitutes life's physiological optimal pressure at any altitude, during thousand of years. He surprisingly shows that his proposal was created by him in 2007 during a dissertation for Doctor of Medicine at the University of Copenhagen (where he was a visiting Professor). It was rejected by the evaluator, classifying it as awkward and affirming that space has nothing to do with high altitude! Yet some of those ideas were later used by the same evaluator in a NASA paper published in 2013, with questionable proposals. Find out why!!
Also learn about BioSpaceForming and how biology can help bypass the pressure laws of physics. This is the future of mankind in Space.
Prof. Dr. Gustavo Zubieta-Calleja is the current Head of the High Altitude Pulmonary and Pathology Institute (IPPA) in La Paz, Bolivia, founded in 1970, by his father, the Mountain Guru, Prof. Dr. Gustavo Zubieta-Castillo. The later, proposed that man can adapt to live at any altitude including the summit of Mt. Everest. It is the first high altitude clinic, created in the world. La Paz is the highest capital city in the world with a population of about 2 million people, who carry out normal lives, as though they were at sea level. Chronic hypoxia changes their physiology through adaptation, and they even benefit from it, health wise and with longevity.
