What's the difference between Urgent Care and Emergency Rooms?

Hi! This is Drew with McCormick agency of Healthcare Solutions Team, here with your Tip of the Week. This week we're going to talk about urgent care centers versus emergency rooms.

In most cases, you're going to want to go to the urgent care center first because it's significantly less expensive than the emergency room. With that said, do you know where your closest urgent care center is? A lot of people don't. Everyone knows where their closest hospital is - which will have an emergency room, but a lot of people haven't spent the time to take a look to see where your closest urgent care center is. And if you haven't done so yet, I'd recommend you do so.

Our recommendation, as far as your insurance is concerned, in most cases, assuming it's regular business hours (urgent care centers aren't open 24 hours like an emergency room will be). But, assuming it's normal business hours and not something life-threatening that needs immediate treatment, go to the urgent care center first. It's going to be significantly less expensive than an emergency room. And if it's something that they can't treat there, they'll end up sending you the emergency room anyway. So, if you're not bleeding out and you can get yourself to the urgent care center, go there first because it'll always be less expensive.
