Finishing up the Yamaha P5000S amplifier 12-9-2012

I wish I had majored in electronic engineering instead of radio and television production. More and more, I find myself needing repair skill for all the vintage gear I'm using and collecting. Any advice on getting started on repair as a hobby such as basic testing and what "to do" and "not to do"?

Everytime you make a video, the music playing sounds excellent, I probably should find the same song and listen to it direct and compare. Since you are keeping the amp for yourself, I could almost see you modding it into a P7000S, except for the royal PITA of getting it apart again, but you do sound tempted to do so :D Nice job!

Well worth the time and parts max :-) You panic far too much mate, i would glue a thin peice of plastic to the inside of the lid where the caps are. So all the npn's on one side and pnp's on the other, push-pull on steroids lol :-)

This one is an ALC888B.

that's odd about that realtek chip. i've had instances where the drive just plain sucks and i go back to using whatever is built into windows. try that, it just might work.

I've never really used Realtek stuff, and I'd recommend getting a discrete soundcard... but ASUS and Creative are both notoriously lame with their own drivers.

If I ever go discrete, I'll probably get an HT Omega card. I love the Realtek ALC889 in my main PC though.

I'm hoping to do some testing on it this weekend. It might be a simple fix.

Perhaps try different psu, it MIGHT be down to filtering!

It happens with 2 different boards, in different computers. I'll be looking into the problem more soon.

What are your thoughts on switching vs traditional transformers/power supply's in amps? I've heard some people say they won't touch them, but I cant say i can hear much difference between the examples units have. Cheers

The main advantage is weight. If the switching type is done right, they can work very well. However I think the traditional power supplies are much simpler and less fragile.

that sounds like a toshiba PN but other people can make them too i like these amps they sound amazing when you have them connected to good speakers like the ones you built

I never did a power test, but I do use it on occasion to run a couple of my subs when one of my other amps breaks down. I might be putting it up for sale soon though, because I need to get my truck fixed.

Congrats on fixing the Amp! If you wanted to sell the amp ... i would cut small circles out of some black abs and a drop of super glue or hot melt to adhere them to those caps.

You know there's no point in listening to electronic music through a tube amp, right?

do you normally re cap all the amp u work on or you check em first with the ESR meter for bad ones?

Instead of insulating the top of those caps, you could put some tape on the inside of the cover or you could attach plastic strips to it with double sided tape.

Yes those are in Sony home theater receivers I just had to repair a Sony I don't remember which model it was but those at 8 transistors that were in it I had to do it for my next door neighbor

Sony use mn2488 and mp1620 transistors in their receivers. they're made by Sanken
