Open G tuning makes it so that when you strum all of the open strings, you are playing a G major chord - and what this means is that if you just press down all the strings on any fret, you are playing a different major chord. This allows us to play all major chords with one finger!

To tune to open G tuning, we have to lower the pitch (loosen the strings) on three strings. We lower the two E strings to the note D (one whole step down). We also lower the A string to a G (one whole step down)

A great place to start is to switch between a G chord, a C chord, and a D chord. In the key of G, these are the three major chords, and they go very well together. Play a G chord by strumming all of the open strings. Play a C by pressing down fret 5, and play a D by pressing down fret 7.
Mix and match these three chords as you see fit.

If you want to know how to find certain chords, or identify which chords you are playing, then you need to know where the root note of the chord is.
With this open tuning, the two root notes are on the 5th string, and the 3rd string, counting toes to nose. These means that to identify the root of the chord, you just have to look at what the note is on the 5th string.

Now what if we want to make the other most common type of chord, which is a minor chord? Well the only difference between a major and minor chord is the note we call the “third” of the chord. A major chord has a major third, and a minor chord has a minor third, which is one half step, or one fret lower, in relation to the root note. If we look at our open G tuning, there is only one third, and it’s the note B, which is on the 2nd string, counting toes to nose.

What this means is that there is no super simple way to play a minor chord because we won’t be able to do it on one fret, BUT we can do it fairly easily on three strings, where I'm playing in E minor chord. I'm playing fret 9 on the first and third string, and fret 8 on the second string.

Try to play the chord progression G - D - Em - C. The three major chords you can bar with one finger as explained earlier, and the Em, you’ll have to use three fingers across the top three strings as shown in the graphic above.

The other great way to use this tuning is to just strum an open G chord and play single note melodies and riffs at the same time on any string! To me, this is a very meditative and peaceful way of playing with the constant G chord drone going on. I especially like to do this across the high E string, because the melody really stands out!
