Gaited Horse Canter - Tennessee Walking Horse Learning to Canter - Sara -Gaited Horse Training

Sara is a sweet TWH in for training to learn to canter. She will gait, trot and pace when loose and can canter loose. I am teaching her the word canter and using poles to help her to understand what I want her to do.

Watch and see if you can see the difference between when she paces, trots or walks into the poles. You will see she has the hardest time getting the canter and is more likely to cross canter when she paces in. Cross canter means she is on the wrong lead behind. When she trots or walks its much easier to get her canter and you will see the canter is better. When she paces, she is more lateral and therefore its easier for her to cross canter which is not a proper canter. But its easier to go from lateral to a lateral canter - cross canter, and diagonal to a diagonal canter. So if pacey in time try to get them to walk or canter in.

They will be anxious in the beginning so wait till they calm down to try and get them to walk in.

Depending on the horses athletic ability and their level of understanding will determine how long it takes them to figure this exercise out. But jumping and pole work will help your canter get better and help your horse learn to canter.
