Losing parents places a heavy burden on the lives of orphans, whether it is caused by man or nature. Orphans are most vulnerable to being exploited and mistreated due to their lack of protection and finances. Many get sold off as cheap slave labour, or worse. Most orphans especially from poor family have no access to adequate housing, sanitation, food, clean water or an education.

Collaborating with Muslim Aid Australia, Muslim Aid Indonesia designed Orphan Aid programme to address the needs of 47 orphans and improve their lives in a way that respects and preserves the customs and traditions of the countries where they reside. The programme also aims to indirectly benefit the rest of the orphanage community with “Plus Programmes” that work on 4 main components: food and nutrition, health (regular medical & dental check up, and also hygiene and sanitation education), education, self development & life skill and lodging provision (mattress, bed, bed cover, pillow, cupboard).

Age range of 47 orphans are variants, therefore self development and life skill activities are designed considering to their age groups. We divide the group based on their age and location. Writing skill training was delivered in 3 group categories: elementary school (4-6th grade), Junior school category and Senior school category. They learn how to write poem, play and short story. There 7 children who have a good achievement in writing poem, play and story. The orphans at Umar Bin Khotob and Amanah orphanage increase their academic capacity on English and Mathematics through extra academic lesson activity. While 24 orphans and some their guardian at Nurus Sulthon learn about Islamic and Al-Qur'an learning. All orphans at 5 orphanage also learn about waste management and organic cultivation. This learning process will become input for their life which also give impact to their future life.

In addition, MAI also equip the orphans with education Child Protection (so that they understand and be aware of the danger that could threaten them), through cooperation with some NGOs Yogyakarta as Rifka Annisa and Cita Health Foundation.
