March 1915: The British Army launches a massive assault on the German trench lines at Neuve Chappelle in Belgium. Their initial artillery barrage shreds the German line. All that stands between the 9,000 British soldiers advancing through the gap is a unit of 90 infantrymen of the 11th Jaeger Battalion. But the Jaegers have an advantage: they are armed with two MG08 Maxim-style machine guns. In just 90 minutes, they inflict 1,000 casualties against the advancing British infantry. They are eventually taken out by artillery fire but the cost to the British graphically demonstrates the power of this new weapon of warfare. This episode looks into the invention and evolution of the machine gun, and how the weapon that changed the art of war was adopted and adapted by war factories around the world.
