If I am doing a "price check" on the phone then I will ask for a gress-timate and I say that I understand that is not a quote but a guess on what I have described. I like to know a ballpark figure to see if I can afford the repair before I begin to waste the repair dude's valuable time.

Worked for a guy as contract tech support and he said to always bill to the next quarter hour because as sure as shit you would be asked a question on the way out the door and that billing method covered the question time.
