Why Magnus betrayed the emperor?

The legion fought for the legion and for Prospero. Not for Magnus. Ariman actually gave Magnus a verbal ass chewing right before heading out to face the wolfs.

I try to warn you and you order an attack on me?? I would have had a nice wolf coat later on if I was him.

Can he do one thing right? Not only could he not surrender properly, nor commit suicide, he could not even betray the empire properly. He betrayed his own Legion, and then, when nearly wiped out, defended it.

Magnus fought back at the moment he heared and saw the wulven.
His Legion was marked as the Mutants, the Sorcerers with the curse of the fleshchange and now Russ sends his own mutated sons against him and his legion?
No!

Imagine if they reveal Russ knew Horus changed the order but did it anyway.

So... he tried to do nothing, again, and still got it wrong?

Honestly, I think Magnus is one of the few that’s actually justified here. He really was trying to do the right thing and in those first few books he does try to convince Horace like don’t do it man you’re getting tricked Erebus isn’t your friend. Just for him to try to warn his dad and Lehman rush come to just slaughter him. Nobody asks any questions. Nobody tries to get answers. It’s just a wholesale slaughter so I’m actually seeing Magnus is quite justified, especially given the fact that he’s trying to like just accept his punishment at first.

Russ should have questioned Horus' orders to destroy the thousand sons. I also think breaking Big E's psychic barrier was stupid and unnecessary. He should have found at least 3 ways to warn him and then reach out to his other brothers that he knew would be loyal (like Russ, the Lion, Dorn, etc.) Like Perturabo and Fulgrim, the thousand suns falls was very preventable.

They fought for Prospero and it’s people. They evacuated citizens to the center of the city and held the line against the Wolves, Sisters of Silence and Custodes as long as they could. Magnus killed one of his captains right before this and the rest of them saw it so the commanders at least were not fighting for Magnus.

His sheer hubris until the end condemned his world and legion, he know he was to be taken back, but instead because of his shame he thought to let himself and sons be obliterated, sad story but Magnus had chances times and again and still thought he knew better.
Tool of a guy.

Why couldn't he just have listened. jeez man. He was the key to the Golden Throne. Horus would have been toast if Magnus just travelled to Terra and warned the Emperor in person.

Magnus was literally a case study in why you shouldn't rely on your pride. Even the Emperor knew that lesson, and was reminded of it after the Imperium began to fall with Horus' corruption and the Jersey stretching a civil war across nearly a million worlds.

If thousand sons prepared for this battle and didn't turned off theire planetary defense and Magnus at the battle from begining than wolfs and Russ would meet theire doom, with help of custodes or not.
