Great vid guys, really appreciate these kinds of vids because it can be a pain to find some of these contracted hops. Also, HOW DARE YOU SLANDER CITRA!!!
ОтветитьPPS, you guys should do a vid on terpenes or hop oils (preferably citra based:) in brewing.
ОтветитьCat piss sums it up to me. Used to love it but now regularly find it unpleasant
ОтветитьI just grow it by the pounds, I got so sick of buying it and trade some for other stuff I need.
Ответитьrubbish
ОтветитьCan't say I agree with the Citra bashing..it's an excellent hop combined or alone. I do agree however that there are other varieties as good that bring similar and different flavors and aromas to the party. I suppose this criticism was bound to happen as it often does when a hop gets "overused", however there is a reason it was and perhaps still is: it's a great hop that was key in many ways to bringing people to the IPA world. Personally, I love combining Citra with Amarillo, Galaxy and El Dorado. You can't go wrong, but most of the hops you mention work well in this combo too. Hey..variety is the spice of life. Cheers to the hop breeders and growers for bringing us their finest!!
ОтветитьI love El Dorado when done right!
ОтветитьGREAT VIDEO GUYS!!!!! I saw some Cascade hops that have an Alpha-Beta percentage a few tenths apart. They're the hops to use because they're balanced. Usually, fruit flavor, earth, cat urine, pine, etc. are signs of a failure that occurs during fermentation caused by chemically imbalanced wort. The flavors change and vary in strength according to the chemical imbalances in the wort. The infusion method is responsible for the chemical imbalances and the off flavors associated with homebrew.
Ответитьmyrcene is more dank not much citrus, also the cattier a hop is the more citrus, pretty much everything you said is backwards
ОтветитьI brew mostly with European hops (being in Europe and all) but recently I decided to give Citra a go. Just the price tag on it here is discouraging (other US imported hops are sold for half the price). My point is, If I want to make a good hoppy Citra IPA, I'd be paying more for the hops alone than all other ingredients combined. And this is without dry hopping. Thankfully a lot of the other US hops are commercially grown throughout Europe with great success and are available for fraction of the price of imported ones. On a side note, one of my most favorite hops is Mandarina Bavaria (close to Columbus). Very aromatic, high AA, good for bittering, aroma and exceptional for dry hopping.
ОтветитьVery interesting insight on Citra
ОтветитьFound this video and just happened to be drinking a single hop Hallertau Blanc blonde ale that I brewed. Really nice hop in a blonde!
Ответитьhahahahaha what a BS. Better than Citra? yeeee Hallertau Blanc???? son just don`t ! Every hops you mentioned are different than Citra but not better. Really lame...
ОтветитьWhat? I love citra.
ОтветитьReally enjoyed your perspective on this. Brewing seems to run in trends and fads. Sometimes you need to step back and re-evaluate things. Columbus, Centennial : reaching way back (and I agree). El Dorado rocks as well. True confession - I do use Citra quite often too.
Ответитьmicrobrew was interesting in the 80's and early 90's. now finding a pony bottle of MHL makes my day. When people started chugging cat pee beer, i figured there were too many chefs in the kitchen.
ОтветитьAgreed 100% columbus awesome! From Brasil Paner!
ОтветитьI have tasted Citra hopped beers that are in short, mediocre but then again, plenty of other hops of which the same criticism can be leveled. It is the brewers art that ultimately decrees the quality (or lack of it) of the beer. In saying that, when a 100% Citra ale is brewed well, I find it my go to option. Now, I appreciate that many reading this will be from the US and I have to add that by far the best way to enjoy Citra and many of the high alpha hops is in cask conditioned form. I have never enjoyed a keg product nearly as much as I enjoy cask with US style hops.
ОтветитьI like Citra, but am mostly bored with it as it is way overused.
No matter what new hops come out, I'll always go back to Simcoe and Amarillo as my favorites.
I know Catnip didn't work for me but my girlfriend's cat is wasted.
ОтветитьCitra is life
ОтветитьYou guys rip, always great content. Being a new brewer, you have helped me tons.
ОтветитьMore of these hop videos please!
ОтветитьI enjoyed your hops review compairing against Citra; however, one of my favorites using Citra is Tocobaga by Cigar City Brewing, a Red IPA, so good. My other favorites that incorporate some of the hops mentioned are Cigar City Jai-Alai, Stone IPA, Bear Republic Racer 5, Bell's Two-Hearted (Centennial) and Ballast Point's Sculpin IPA. I only drink IPA's with an occasional North Coast Old Rasputin and Orkney's Skull Splitter. Always enjoy brewing content. Thanks for your video.
ОтветитьWhoo! Great to hear a shout for WSU. My wife and I came over to Washington State from the UK to do postdocs in the Dept of Biochemistry and Biophysics from 1980 to 1982. We had a great time there, and can correctly pronounce Coeur D'Alene and Spokane!
ОтветитьThe first hop - Borral? Boreal ? Bural?
ОтветитьChinook is underrated. A little earthy but can be both flavoring hop and bitter. Overall solid.
ОтветитьCentennial is a good one and 1lbs goes a long way !
ОтветитьI love citra, but living in Australia i'll go for galaxy every time
ОтветитьOG C hops for a danky, aggressively bitter win!
ОтветитьWhat are your takes on Lotus?
Ответитьcan you guy scrape the audio and start a podcast on Spotify or some other source?
ОтветитьYes I noticed that with citra over the years it is become pungent and not very tasty.
ОтветитьTo be honest I've gone back to cascade and fuggles
ОтветитьDef! Citra is like Ketchup or Natriumglutamate.
ОтветитьHave you guys ever experimented with the Minnesota Tropica hops? Was thinking about giving them a try but can't find alot of actual experiential information on them.
Ответитьi'm curious if u have noticed any psychoactive effects from hops ... Do the varieties have different effects ?
ОтветитьGreat Video, Whats is the perfect moment for loral hop?
ОтветитьEquanot is amazing
ОтветитьI didn’t bother to read all 154 comments, but the big brewers (3Floyds, Georgetown, many others) have spoiled us with single hop Citras. Those taste great, and are premium Citra for specific lots. But as a homebrewer, or nanobrewer, Citra can and often is inconsistent and I notice in my home brews a unique not too pleasant aroma that forces me to not engage my nose as much. One nanobrewer said Citra is “all over the place” flavor-wise...I think you could add Talus as a substitute to the list.
Ответитьa few of the hops your mentioned are actually on sale at my home brew supplier here in brisbane. 500 grams for $25. think ill be placing an order after seeing this. and experimenting with them. Thx guys.
Ответитьwot u guys think about ekg
Ответитьhail brewers!!! which combinations would you recommend for an ipa..with a footprint of flavor and aroma resin, pine....lime,
greeting from Brazil 🤟🍻🇧🇷
MOSAIC Bro. Just do single hop west coast. Thank me later
ОтветитьCitra hops are the worst and have no place in an IPA. Ever.
ОтветитьI Feel weird drinkin too much hoppy beer or even hop water. Do you?
ОтветитьComet is my personal favorite
ОтветитьTeachers !!! Where are you !!
