Edit: I counted most killings as single murders and group killing (examples for groups range from the FBI and the massacre after L’s death) with the difference being did he do a bunch in a row. First degree murder is punishable by up to 24 years in prison in most states with mass murder (three murders or more at a time, there is no cap to how high it can go) are death penalties or life sentences. The count also uses all possible minor crimes with maximum punishments as well as his incitement of riots and bringing in multiple accomplices.

Does anyone have an actual count yet? I skimmed the comment that's pinned and it seems to be focused on sentencing. I just want a solid kill count, which I think would require an intensive, very analytical viewing of the entire show. You'd need to count the clearly conveyed plot driven murders, as well as the murders depicted in the montages, in addition to anything confirm offscreen via print or dialogue. I think a real, decently accurate number is absolutely achievable. There may be some math involved to determine what the rates might be like between time jumps though, given all the contextual data that is already available.

Light made a really dumb mistake in his convoluted plan because there's a less risky equally convoluted plan that doesn't involve predicting everything. Let's take it from Misa captured in custody point. You have 490 days to get your death note back if you lose it otherwise you lose your possession. You can control people for 23 days before they die. Borrowers can let other people borrow it. If you simply write the instructions out ahead of time, you can have the death note used by the borrower under the control of the death note who has already passed it on to a fourth borrower under the control of the third. The borrowers after the first don't need to actually die and can be left knowing the death note exists because Light's plan reveals they exist anyways. Just because the control of the death note is no longer over the second person does not mean the third, fifth, and every odd won't die so you do plan around that with various deaths and by the way he could even try to make these people criminals by having every odd be a criminal and every even be selecting a criminal they know. We all know somebody. This however makes it harder to track down the evens. Because it's controlling people in a controlception without killing them. Simply write out the instructions. You fill in blank A name. This gives A instructions to fill in a name for B. B fills in a name for C and so forth. While under control each or even alternatingly with it just being those odds who die eventually filling in criminals names that are in the news while Light is in custody. If the every other even destroyed evidence of a previous odd, it would be hard to prove how it even started. Light needs only have another person write out the initial instructions in their handwriting and die to erase he was ever involved even if this scheme is interrupted. Once it's passed to a fourth person, the fourth person destroys the evidence of the first person under control and their killings and so on until you get the notebook back to Light. He merely needs them to leave the notebook somewhere he would know to look and have Misa recover it if they aren't caught. If he stretches it out for months and the killings continue with intermittent pausing, they will clear him. No person under control is going to track down the death note faster than you can have it move to the next person. If they go to Tommy and it's already five people ahead of him and still moving they will give up well before it's found. He could even have every possessed person log who they were onto a non death note piece of paper passed along so he can write them down and have them all die. All they have to is pass the death note to a new person every day who is under control of the death note and still is supposed to die 23 days later but won't because the first person dies after 23 days relieving control of the person who was supposed to die next. Once Light is free and clear, he can have Misa's death note. Track down his. Return hers. Use her eyes and that's all he needs to do get rid of L. Even if this plan was discovered they still don't know he has the second death note and has the eyes option as the fallback. If Misa and him are cleared, he simply needs to at any time return her death note to her to let her get her eyes. And returning her death note could literally be a scrap of paper touching her. If he has hundreds of cycles before it returns home, that's fine because all he has to do is keep it at the university he goes to long enough that L has to find a way to figure out that. And if he clears himself, he need only write some names of his own with creative instructions in the second death note to confuse L further. Make L question how anyone on the campus knew some of the people. The reason L kept Light for 50 days after the killings resumed is because Light admitted to doing it to begin with instead of being adamant he wasn't the killer and basically confirmed it when the killings stopped instead of finding a way to make the killings just continue indefinitely without losing possession. Once killings he could have no possible knowledge of occurred there was still going to be pressure to release him. And with this crazy of a scheme you're going to get rumors but most of them will just obfuscate what is really going on.

If I had to say an amount, he may have had somewhere from 200,000 to 150,000, and that is including how many he made others kill to, but just him alone, he may have had maybe 144,385, but it's just a guess

Just saying light unnecessarily exposed himself while killing ray, do you know how many security cameras there are in japan subway stations. It should of been a wrap right there and then. So we can actually calculate the actual number of at least the first killing spree. If we assume its JUST the 2 pages filled completely, and by what we see he does 2 columns per page, and the death note has 38 lines per page (tried to just count but its a little blurry and my eyes sight isn't the best to begin with so i googled it turns out theres a Cannon awnser of 38 lines per page and 60 pages at any given moment) at 38 lines two columns per page and two pages its 152 victims for the first killing spree

Shame the animators had such a hard on for the character they gave him a dignified and lonely death when in the manga he didn't escape and he died like a b!tch crying begging to Shinigami to save him . After yagami found out shinigami wrote his name on the book ! It would have been a better ending .

Technically you gotta include the deaths by other notebook users to lights tally because he orchestrated the whole thing. Even when he didn’t write the names himself he had others doing it for him and have the notebook up with the pure intent on it being used

7 months later and doing the math of 26 kills a day (presumably) over 5 years (which is 360 x 5) he has a total of 46,800 total kills before dying himself

For some reason, my ADD hyper-fixated on getting an estimate so here is some quick math:
So these are just the numbers in the United States as of 2025, there are 1.25+ Million people in prison or jail (this is including those who are Convicted, Not Convicted, Held in Jails for local authorities authorities and those held for other agencies. In that number, 835K are in for violent crimes (67%). 277K of the population is in for drugs (22%~).

Based on how Light was behaving, those would've been the first one's he'd target which would instantly be a body count of 1,112,000 million..... But now the question becomes how long would it take to write all of those names.

Dividing that body count by the number of days in a year, he would have to kill 3,047 inmates in a day. Now lets make some assumptions:
- Lets say Light spends 8 hours a day writing names.
- Lets say it takes Light 1 minute to write a name.

That would calculate to 60 min per hour (which also equals 60 names) x 8 hours = 480 names. multiply that by 365 days, that becomes = 175,200... Now after some digging online, supposedly, Light has the notebook for 6 years and 2 months after having sending L to the "Forever Box". That means, if Light went full goblin mode, he would've written 1.08 Million Names in that time.

But that's highly unlikely as he did have a full time job and not accounting for additional down time. So lets halve that number and just say its a little more than half 500K names....
