You may have heard media reports about a superbug in the United States lately. Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) has been linked to several deaths in the U.S. after those patients had endoscopic procedures using a dudoenscope. However, Bret Petersen, M.D., calls it an important procedure with the potential to save many lives. Dr. Petersen says more than 100,000 endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography ERCP procedures are done in the U.S. each year and patients should not be fearful.
