Allyson Clay will spoke about the evolution of the use of text in her work over the years culminating in her recent paintings. In a broad range of media, she has been interested in the confinements of modernism, the symbolic spaces of the city, and the exclusions of femininity from its voices. In Clays’ early text works, she explored a subjective voice amidst the abstract spaces of the city. Her new paintings pose questions about how words are both confluent with
and antithetical to the material of paint.
Allyson Clay has a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and an MFA from the University of British Columbia. She has exhibited nationally and internationally. Clay’s work resides in several collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Banff Centre, and the Art Gallery of Windsor. Awards include Senior Artist Grants from the Canada Council, the Mexico/Canada/USA Artist Exchange Residency, and the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Residency Program. She is a Professor in the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University.
