From “River of Grass” to Toxic Estuaries: How the legacy of Marjory Stoneman Douglas can inform today’s fight for clean water presented by Eve Samples

In connection with "Clyde Butcher: Cathedrals of Florida", join us for a virtual lecture presented by Eve Samples, Executive Director of Friends of the Everglades.

Three-quarters of a century after Marjory Stoneman Douglas published her seminal book River of Grass, the Greater Everglades ecosystem faces new threats from old culprits. Manmade pollution and Florida’s flawed water-management system have led to increasingly frequent harmful algal blooms that threaten human health and the future of our environment—from red tide to blue-green algae. Fortunately, Marjory’s resolve offers inspiration for the work that faces Friends of the Everglades and other environmental advocates today.

Eve Samples is executive director of Friends of the Everglades, a nonprofit founded in 1969 by Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Prior to joining Friends of the Everglades, Eve worked as a journalist for 20 years. She is a native of Miami and received her B.A. in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
