As someone who’s bought many iPhones new for over £1000, had one stolen from my hands and poor experiences with 3rd party repair shops, I’m happy with what Apple are doing to block the harvesting of parts off used phones. I’d actually wish they’d go a step further and give you the option to remotely nuke all of the hardware via FindMy in the event your device is stolen, as activation lock is circumventable in china, IMEI lock is circumvented via exporting to other countries. Apple should have better trade-in programs for all of the dead hardware out there.

I agree with the Linux comment / and would if Apple won’t listen be can make our companies/ make other Linux / Unix macOS like software and iOS software but enough of iCloud lock / I would do remote data erase/ allow repair tech or new owner to install new OS on device / you could still put message on device to that was stolen but if new owner bought it not knowing that and can’t return for refund or it’s past return time especially if device is 5/ or 10 years old it should be unlocked after remote wipe

if u have an iphone that has its serial number missing from Apple servers like my iphone13promax had in 2021 you cant get it fixed with apples repair service.

i still can use it but dont break anything i still thing the iphone12promax is better due to being able to switchout the sim reader to a duo sim reader

I really think you need to also focus on the fact that these safeguards that Apple are claiming to put in place are just worked around by "refurbishers" taking the original touch ic chip of the original screen then transplanting it into a 3rd party screen to fool consumers into buying what they think is a "genuine refurbished phone" as it has no warnings then of none oem parts used. This issue is a massive safety issue when the original battery bms is welded onto a 3rd party cell along with a "tag" to fool IOS into thinking it's an original battery and has zero cycle count...

Activation Locking components is great! All you need to do is have them removed from your account when you dispose of your phone. Encourage that with say $10 off a new phone or something.. but it's great to see Apple preventing stolen components being used. Agree they should make it work with swapped parts provided obtained correctly. New phones are more likely to be stolen so targeting those for component lock is probably more useful too.

Activation Lock is weird .. the iphone has a lost mode / stolen mode but its not used for this. Instead activsiton lock is enabled by default and you have to manually turn it off when you sell /give away your phone.. unlike lost mode which is explicitly a like yes i want to enable this.. its .. so strange

Luckily development of new software and hardware for older machines goes faster in the hands of fans, than in the hands of the original manufacturers. In the near future it will be cheaper, more open and more fun to access the web on say an Amiga 500, than on the latest MacBook FortKnox running MacOS 23 Houdini.

I think Apes moves are all about preventing their Chinese suppliers from ripping them off by replacing components with cheaper ones Apple does not approve. By designing parts like they do they force suppliers to stay honest. That it ruined customers right to repair just puts a smile on their face. But I don’t think it’s intentional. They just don’t care about you more than control over suppliers and money.

Hey Luke, you are so right! Once I buy an Apple product it is (supposed to be) mine and I should be able to decide what and how I (have it) repair(ed). What is the legal difference between buying a car and a computer? It is a simple purchase. If I buy a car I can repair it any way I want.

Of course I understand that self repair and using third party parts can annulate the manufacturer's guaranteee. I rather have a bigger MacBook like the MacBook Pro 2012 that I can repair myself, then something I can not open.

If Apple goes to far on blocking self repair or spying on us through AI we should simply stop buying Apple products.

It would be nice if Apple would just quit being dicks about it because it seems that nothing good EVER happens when the tentacles of the government have to get involved. Part of me says it's Apple's right because no one is forcing us to spend money with Apple and there are alternative products... and that's true... but COME ON, Apple! You're NOT helping make a case for limited government, and you shouldn't SCREW the people who support your and KEEP you in business!

It appears to be all about squeezing the most revenue out of a device by it's manufacturer through control of the part. It would be interesting if a software glitch or manufacturing defect affected a series of devices. This could backfire against this type of legislation leading to class action lawsuits.

one thing apple needs to do regarding activation locked devices is remove them from the server if the device hasn't been used in say 6 months to a year. doing that will allow so many devices to be used again instead of being paperweights

With no adult supervision in this country, corporations get away with fraud, deception and nonsense because no one is held accountable. the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act if actually enforced, covers 90 percent of the crap Apple and other manufacturers pull, but the onus is on the FTC to enforce it. The FTC is a paper tiger gutted by the Trump administration and a joke as their enforcement activities are a ripple in a toilet bowl. Until we have real representation of consumers, you can count on crooked politics to continue unchecked.

The thing is, Luke lives in a fantasy world where everything was already done when he got there. But in the real world, the fact that a part of the iPhone hardware has “activation lock” makes perfect sense if that same device also has Activation Lock. This is because it would prevent people from stealing phones to remove individual parts and sell them to third parties for repairing other iPhones. This happens everywhere, in every single country in Latin America and some in Europe. It might even happen here in the United States. But my dear friend Luke sees this as a bad thing (that parts from iCloud-locked phones don’t work in other phones).

Keep fighting the good fight man, I long gave up on ever seeing a meaningful right to repair law pass in this country. I've spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of my time over the last 3 years fighting for right to repair, going so far as being interviewed by the White House Economic Council re: right to repair, and I gave up. I gave up for the same reason I told them. Unless the law specifically limits the amount of profit a company can make off of replacement parts, the manufacturer will ALWAYS price them so high where it doesn't make sense to do it yourself or pay a third party repair shop to do it when the manufacturer's repair service barely costs more than the part alone. This will never happen in America.

I also don’t need those Apple Silicone M chips crunching memory chips soldered on the mainboard of those devices rendering them worthless wrecks after warranty has run out after 1 year …

To be fair to Apple, every manufacturer is trying to do this. Apple is the worst because they sell themselves as being "green". Hypocrites. The solution- don't buy their new products, stay with the older ones. They are perfectly usable for the 99% of us.

In regards to the issue e-waste, I think if a device is activation locked but not reported as lost or stolen, after a grace period say 90 days the phone can be reset and activation lock is automatically removed. This doesn’t fix the problem fully as will stuff have a large number of phones remaining locked but at least cuts down on good useable phones going to landfill.

Parts pairing is a response to phone theft. So… there’s that. If it doesn’t reduce theft, it’s hurting consumers.

And I don’t think it does.
