One big question: Why did she translate the Heptapodish word or symbol meaning "tool" as "weapon"? The whole plot turns on that misunderstanding.

Every Alien or extraterrestrial movie and T.V. show ever made has a "White" representative for earth and usually nothing good comes from that.

This whole clip is basically what it’s like smoking that bubonic chronic for the first time. She toked it up, and the magic happened.

The cuts to Louise's daughter in the movie are so touching. This is an incredible movie. Every six months or so I take the dvd out of the library and see it again.

When I saw this movie on the big screen, I realized early on that the scenes weren't being shown in chronological order, but I didn't get it. Now I want to watch it again, partly because I now understand the story, and partly because Amy Adams is in it.

I think I understand now. Weapon here is knowledge. Use it in what is said. "Louise has knowledge. Use knowledge". Obviously their usage of terminology is different. Weapon = tool = knowledge. It's all the same to them. Our languages, especially English, is too specific. But then again not really. When we use the word Kleenex everyone to a person automatically knows we're talking about facial tissues even though Kleenex is a brand. Same with Vaseline. You reading this automatically know what it is. So to the Heptapods they don't differentiate between weapon and tool or knowledge. It's the same to them in their language. When Costello said, "Louise has weapon. Use Weapon" they're saying, "You figured it out. You have the knowledge. Use it." When you think about it, it's beautiful. It reminds me of the Star Trek: TNG episode "Darmok" when Picard figures out the alien language and he starts speaking to them and the Tamarian gleefully says, "Sokath his eyes open" meaning "He understands!" Wonderfully done.

this movie was so dumb that i turned it off (and yes it was a freebie movie) when I saw what the "aliens" looked like ... i'm pretty sure such klutzy looking beings without real "fingers" could NOT build even a sand castle let along a space ship
