I remember when I was around 12yo, we went on family vacation and there were Portugese Man o War washed up on the beach. I told my parents and brother not to touch them as they can cause harm. They didn’t listen and played with them. Luckily nothing bad happened and I showed them a video back home about how dangerous they are. The look on my mom’s face was priceless. Quite a stressful vacation for a 12yo with an undiagnosed anxiety disorder…

Fun Fact: A Portuguese man o war's "tentacles" can separate from the actual "body", and then they'll just float around. However, they can still hurt you even if they're not connected. So even if you look in the water and there are no man o war's, there can be a "tentacle" just chilling around. No you wont see it. Yes I've seen it happen.

One thing to note, don't actually pee on jellyfish stings. At worst, you set off even more nematocysts, by changing the ph of the medium they are in. At best...I mean, you're still covered in pee, and someone had to expose themselves, to do it. So...😂 Best practice, in the case of a sting is to rinse the stinger off with seawater. And rinse the skin a few more times with seawater. Then, seek medical attention, immediately. Try to avoid touching the area. The pressure from a finger or hand can also set off the microscopic cells, which some may still be lingering on your skin. Same with a credit card. Don't use it to scrape the stinger off. Just splash it well enough with seawater, and that should dislodge it. Do not use freshwater or tap or bottled or vinegar. Same reason as the pee. Changes the ph, potentially chemically triggering the cells.

Yeah,i'm from Cape Verde and as a kid i used to find lots of Man O'Wars washed up on the beach. I just used to grab them and pop 'em,it was fun,like popping the bubble wraps. Until one day i grabbed one,popped it with my whole hand and i immediately felt the sting. I cried a lot and learned my lesson 😂

I always felt conspicuous sounded like suspicious, which is how I remembered it. Then the in- prefix means to invert the meaning, hence inconspicuous.

I'm Australian and one day it was school holidays so we were visiting tge beach. There were rock pools and my little brother and I started poking around in them. My dad gave us both sticks and told us not to put our fingers in thw water. When I asked why he said "if your brother gets bit by a blue ringed octopus, we wouldn't even have time make it back to the car"
