Working in industry for 30 years I encountered quite a few 'alpha males'. I think they were actually psychopaths willing to manipulate others to their own advantage. I think alpha male behaviour in humans is actiually pathalogical.

Actually that's not true Alpha Wolfs do exist, they just don't occur within the natural family pack. Outside of the natural pack, that more closely resembles our society where we grow up leave our natural family pack and compete for resources and a mate, they certainly are a thing.

Makes 'natural' sense...family groups of humans are not that much different thru the Paleolithic when humans, like the wolves, were just another pack species surviving as a pack. I think this was a factor in why together, wolves and humans, made a bigger more effective pack.

Alpha aka meaning “leader”
To say a leader doesn’t exist in a wolf pack is ridiculous.
A pack leader exists in countless species. The dominate animals show their dominance while the weaker more submissive animals show that they are submissive. Aka beta. Or whatever word you want too use. It’s obvious if your pack is your family the father would be the leader until he is dimmed unfit to continue.
Even in gorillas for god sake 😂 and the 1 “alpha” protects & leads the pack.
If wolves and dogs don’t have a leader then it is safe to say that any interference from them being wild is damaging to them in every regard because they will be controlled by somebody.
If there was no leader then why do dominate wolves correct their pack members? Because one of them is telling them in what way they should be acting. They are literal killers. They are wild animals and have adapted the use of a wise leader in order for the survival of themselves.
We should be allowing dogs to roam wherever they please and allow them to coexist in whatever packs they choose. But obviously we’re not gonna do that because we’re wise enough to know that animals can be controlled because they control each other when it comes to the leadership role & the submissive role aka alpha and beta 😂 if

Also also, there aren’t just wolves in nature. We see similar behaviour in lions, apes, etc. Battles for mating rights are a sort of essence of being male.

After 1995, a lot of new research has come out about pack structure and behavior of Yellowstone wolves. There are multiple packs with more than 15 wolves and some packs have had more than 30. These large packs are not comprised of just parents and siblings. The oldest male is not always the leader. There are multiple documented instances of outside wolves coming in and violently asserting themselves as the leader/alpha.

The narrative about their not being alpha wolves is based on old science from the '60s and '70s.

I had two dogs which are not same breed and the younger dog became the alpha. If it’s a family pack there is already a hierarchy which is the male wolf being the alpha. But if you put different wolves together they from the hierarchy mentioned as alpha pack

Just because it may not apply to wolf packs (or families as this video claims) and the original inventor of the term may have been incorrect, doesn't change the fact that animals, in particular dogs, do often arrange themselves into a hierarchy.

I would have to disagree, I have had two encounters with large packs of wolves, and there was definitely a pack leader.

So doesn't "alpha" just mean the breeding male & female in the family or is that term not used for that anymore? Coyotes are the same. We have urban coyotes (they exist in every major city in the US except Hawaii) here in San Francisco. They first appeared in my neighborhood in 2015. At the time, California was in its 4th year of extreme drought & food sources for them were extremely scarce which resulted in them being more visible to humans as they spent more hours hunting for food. We would see them on a daily basis napping in front yards on manicured lawns. What a relief it was when the rains finally came in 2016- both for humans & coyotes! They are the most adaptable creatures on the planet. They are territorial and live in family units so when we see coyotes in our neighborhood, they are all part of the same family- a breeding pair & their offspring from this year & the previous year. It's sad because most coyotes in urban areas are killed by cars before the age of 2- when the yearling pups head off in search of their own territory & a mate.

So indead of Alpha males, we should say Daddy matterial ?

This is false. Wolves are alone, often. When they do run in packs, it is because they are mating. There's definitely an Alpha wolf over younger, weaker, smaller, more ignorant wolves.
