- Lincoln voiced the exact opposite following his innaugeration, stating he had no interest in ending slavery by force or making the south surrender their slaves. His post civil war plans were also focused on returning slaves back to Africa believing integration of the majority of the formerly enslaved population would not be possible. It was not until the Emancipation Proclemation that Lincol vocally supported anti slavery legislation of any kind and even then it did not state the former slaves would be granted the same rights.

- In December of 1860, before Lincoln was even elected, South Carolina seceeded and following Lincoln's election, only one month after, various federal arsenals were raided and it was these actions coupled with unaminous secession. It was the southern states who refused any form of negotiation with Lincoln

- Lee's statements about slavery were confusing but he was hardly against it in its entirety even on philosophical grounds. While he did state, "In this enlightened age, there are few I believe, but what will acknowledge, that slavery as an institution is a moral & political evil in any Country." He follows this up with,

"It is useless to expatiate on its disadvantages. I think it however a greater evil to the white than to the black race, & while my feelings are strongly interested in behalf of the latter, my sympathies are more strong for the former. The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, socially & physically. The painful discipline they are undergoing, is necessary for their instruction as a race, & I hope will prepare & lead them to better things. How long their subjugation may be necessary is Known & ordered by a wise & merciful Providence. Their emancipation will sooner result from the mild & melting influence of Christianity, than the storms & tempests of fiery Controversy. This influence though slow is sure."

Lee, though recoganizing slavery was a moral and political evil of the age, considered it as such due the white man's "burden" a concept that justifies slavery as instructionary and best for the slave with the owner being responsible for the true burden of educating the slave was the owner's and the slave was better off. He was, in no way, opposed to slavery as a whole on any philosophical grounds. He justified it by trying to claim the Bible supported it and that it was some sort of Christian duty and an instrument of spreading Christianity. The same arguments made by Conquistadors. So Lee was ultimately a slavery supporter. I only go into this much detail to try to ensure no confusion is arisen.

- Sherman's tactics were hardly scortched earth. He strategically avoided fighting any Confederate Army, specifically kept his men from harming civilians as much as possible, and destroyed largely only agricultural land whilst liberating slaves during the process and sending refugees towards Confederate cities. It was the stragglers who were responsible for the majority of the crimes towards civilians that occured during Sherman's march and there was an incident in a major city where alcohol had been left and Sherman lost control of his now drunk army.

- Lee was in no way running from Serhamn, let alone from Grant. Lee surrendered following a battle at Apomatix in which he surrendered only his army. Other officers like Johnston would either surrender seperately or die in battle and their men would be taken as prisoners of war. Davis himself was captured and did not give surrender of any official kind. Instead, the Confederate resistence merely peetered out and the Union accepted the seperate surrenders as official ends to the war. Johnston was the man being chased and encircled by Sherman whereas Lee always remained in front of Grant, never being encircled though at great cost to his own army.

My 4th great grandfather was a sergeant in the Confederate Army of Tennessee. After the war he and some relatives took up moonshining. We actually found a newspaper article from 1884 about two sheriffs from Nashville who were shot and beaten trying to catch them.

That these dead shall NOT have died in vain,
That this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, AND
That government:
- of the people
- by the people

Shall NOT perish from the earth!

no earlier in one of President Lincoln 's terms as a senator he he did State himself as an abolitionist but when he was running for office a routine said no I'm not going to take your slaves he talked about containing slavery not ending what the Confederate States took as a direction because they knew it would eventually died out if they didn't get more slave states and eventually they would be outnumbered in the Senate and they wouldn't be able to keep slavery they started to separate from Union before Lincoln was in office, Lincoln was the president of elect at the time.

There's a couple of factors that are left out.

Firstly Lincoln's election was a major factor but not just for the reason stated. He didn't run in any of the states that seceded. He basically flipped them the bird and rubbed it in their faces.

Secondly his assassination was what saved his reputation. If he died 24hrs later. His reputation would be in the toilet forever and Boothe would be a folk hero who took out a corrupt tyrant. Just look up the Sinking of the Sultana. It sank entirely because of Lincoln's corruption.
