Here in Brazil, railway companies, including the one I work for, run with loaded wagons at the front of the train and empty ones at the back, in addition there is a weight limit between loaded wagons, to avoid exactly what happened there.

Hey Mark, has there been a derailment there before? When we were up there last year at tunnel 2 we noticed a set of wheels up on the hill off the dirt road near the main road. Just curious.

If dangerous goods are also transported here, such as toxic substances or highly explosive goods, I only hope that these freight trains are not extremely long and that the wagons are well maintained. But as previously commented, the radius is extremely small for these tonnages. All it takes is an incorrect load on the load carrier and the weakest wagon jumps off the track. It's all pure physics.

Got to wonder if that little dust storm was GE's Clean Rail system, where a powerful blast of air is sent down the sander pipes (usually without the sand at the same time) got switched on by mistake, or if the sander came on when it really wasn't needed. Usually the sander doesn't eject sand with that much force, as they would prefer the sand remain on the rail for the wheels to benefit from traction. Clean Rail was designed to blast wicked amounts of pressurized air down at the rail, to help remove rainwater, snow, leaves, any other debris that would cause the drives to lose adhesion to the rail.

I've just come across your channel today. What fascinates and amazes me are the length of the trains on the continent of the US! Obviously you have massive distances to cover so you need to maximize the movement of freight. Here in the UK the longest freight trains are around 2,500 feet long, but most are shorter.
