Hey there, Ramblers and Rovers!

Meet Perla, a spider monkey I met while living with the Maya in Mexico's Lacandon jungle.

The Lacandons live close to nature-- maybe a little too close. The jungle is their home and all of its creatures are their friends, but Perla gets treated like a sister.

Perla like to monkey around... literally. Sometimes she can get a little unruly with the children while playing, but mostly she hangs out at the family store by the road, steals coins from unsuspecting tourists and occasionally tries to hijack a car to make off with her ill-gotten loot.

Life in the Lacandon jungle is unique, a beautiful example of how differently people around the world live their lives, and a lesson in how we can coexist with animals as family, even if it feels like they might tear your hair out at any moment.

This short was shot in the Lacandon jungle, among the Lacandon Maya people of Mexico. It's meant to inspire you to travel to the forgotten places of the world to have adventures of your own! Maybe you can meet a monkey too!
