No matter what type of adoption hopeful adoptive families pursue (private/independent, agency-assisted, government-assisted), they will need a pre-placement home study and, depending upon the state families adopt within, post-placement home study visits might also be required. Home studies are an evaluation to determine whether or not families are appropriate for whatever situation they are considering for adoption. Home studies include an immense amount of paperwork, references, criminal background checks, interviews, and home visits. Most adoptive families say that they were scared of the home study process before it happened, but look back and realize that it wasn't nearly as scary as they imagined it to be. The home study process is merely in place to make sure children are placed in suitable homes that they will thrive within, and though the process might feel daunting, it is in place for the right reasons. In this video, adoptive parents and adoption professionals not only discuss what is involved in a pre-placement adoption home study, but some tips for preparing for the process.
