Joy, so often falsely equated with happiness. People try to fill the hole within their hearts with toys, trips, friends and family. But they always find that they are left empty.
The things of this world can give us happiness, but happiness is inherently fleeting. It does not abide. It does not satisfy. It is wholly dependent on the whims of this lost and dying world.
We are like a man dying of thirst, who will drink ocean water in his desperation. We pursue that which we believe will give us respite, but ultimately just drags us down. We let the distractions of this world act as substitute for the true joy that comes from abiding in Jesus. We search for respite where it cannot be found. But in Christ, there is a refuge from this lost and dying world.
For in Christ there is fullness of joy, and at his right hand are pleasures forevermore.
