RUSSIA: NATO COMMANDER ON THREE DAY VISIT TO RUSSIA

NATO's supreme commander has been paying his respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow.

General George Joulwan -- the NATO Commander-in-Chief -- on the second of a three-day visit to Russia, later went to see the 119th Airborne Regiment at Narofominsk, outside of Moscow.

Accompanying him: the commander of Russia's Parachute Regiment, General Evgeny Podkolzin.

After this rather solemn moment, Joulwan headed off to see Russia's 119th Airborne Regiment at Narofominsk, outside Moscow.

There, he inspected the regiment, chatting with the troops.

He remarked on how well some of them spoke English.

Speaking to reporters, he talked about some of the problems still affecting NATO-Russian relations.

SOUNDBITE:
"Now that's really a political question so I'm here to talk about how we can work together in a military to military way. But future NATO membership, future NATO membership, NATO enlargement are really political issues that need to be decided by the politicians.

Q: But do you hope to solve it successfully?

A: Well that's up to the politicians.

The 119th regiment then showed off its military skills.

A number of veterans of the regiment have volunteered for duty in the former Yugoslavia and more are expected to follow suit.

Russian cooperation was essential for the future, said Joulwan.

"We have to live in the present and plan for the future. And no country is more important for the future than Russia."

The Russian troops in the former Yugoslavia are deployed in the American-controlled sector in northeastern Bosnia.

Joulwan's also is likely to discuss Russian opposition to NATO's expansion into Eastern Europe.
