After the failure of the Reform Movement of 1898, Kang You-Wei, one of the leaders of the movement, went into exile overseas. He travelled to various countries, organized "The Royalist Association" and collected large sums of donations aiming to rejuvinate China. In the Spring of 1904, he came to Sweden and was struck by the natural beauty here. Using money donated by his supporters, he bought an island in Saltsjobeden in the Southeast corner of Stockholm and thereupon he built a Chinese-style garden. He lived on the Island for three years until 1907. Today after over 100 years, the Chinese poet Li Li who has lived in Sweden for more than 30 years revisited here.
