Phone call fees have improved. They used to average $5+ per minute.

But these fees can accrue to those waiting for trial who are eventually found innocent.

not to mention that if you call someone in prison, there’s also a charge. If you use your credit card, it will be charged as a cash advance.

The state should be forced, legislated, to hire these new releases from prison, say, at the DMV or such since THEY just finished “rehabilitating” them to work in society by giving that first leg up.

I wish you came out with solutions and actions taking place by your investigation to solve problems on universal level. You tattle, shame and claim high ground. But to the soulless, rich, untouched, and unopposed evil of these Oligarchs? Which are BOTH if not five sides of the same coin.

Why should those of us that manage to stay out of jail foot the bills for inmates? Also, the vast majority of these
accumulated debts will never be paid. Don’t know what the answer is but this makes it seem like it’s unfair to charge inmates. I disagree.

Working earns 0.42 USD/hour (before garnishments)
Placing phone calls cost 0.14 USD/min, 30 minute calls, 4 times/week.

He has to work for an hour to talk for 3 minutes, so 10 hours per call. That's a 40 hour workweek just cover his phone calls. Nothing else.

To everyone saying "solution is don't do crime" the state of Tennessee is now investigating dui police quotas where last year 600 sober drivers were arrested for drunk driving and some went to jail. The state makes money from crime, when profits are down, innocent people go to jail, defend and release, and still end up with debt.

Imagine how the average tax payer feels having to foot the 50k+ a year per prisoner. However, I do wish they focused on rehabilitation instead of punishment. I wish they had somewhere cleaner to live. The reason they are in prison is to keep them away from the rest of us because they can't be trusted in society but that should be enough. To torture prisoners is insane. I mean, it's ridiculous and I sure hope it changes one day soon however with the current administration, punishment is going to be rampant. But yeah I mean it sucks that they have debt but someone has to pay for it.

The American DNA is so authoritarian, even if it is a Democracy, it can not help itself but to resort to violence, legalized or not, by default. The historical Violence Track Record proves it. The archaic and religious based Obey and (heavy) Punishment mentality or psych is blocking a much needed Social Mind Progress.. like for Rehabilitation, Resocializing, Science Education, etc for a real Humane society

Our jailing and judicial system needs work. But being poor is not the reason to commit crime. I wish you would have also written up the stats on how much it cost the public to keep the prisoners in jail. Part of being in prison is a punishment as well as rehab.
