We come to playa blanca twice a year. We no longer stay in hotels as we don’t want to pay for “services” we don’t use. We rent an apartment and like to eat out. We like to support the local restaurants but the last few times we have rented an apartment in what I would think is a residential area. Why are so many Vv licences granted for this type of accommodation?Are the licences open ended or for a set number of years?

Spain stole the Canary Islands. Give them back to the Berbers, the true ethnic group from North Africa, and go and live in Spain.

All the mains water in Lanzarote is desalinated. The plant is currently running at reduced capacity due to maintenance and refurbishment. Clearly major investment is required. The hotels being built have been in the planning system for approximately ten years. Tourist numbers are breaking records and that has consequences. The airport is about to have some money spent on it but nowhere near enough. The curse of AirB&B is known and widespread. Many Cities are already taking action. If you rely on the Mail Sun or Express for your news god help you. The takeaway message from this is always be considerate to ones hosts and leave the sense of entitlement at home.

You can't really blame the locals at all. These issues are serious and can you imagine how much fresh water is consumed at the new Barcelo Playa Blanca every day??? The problem is that because of all the bad publicity in the UK people may look at alternative destinations.
We have already seen a massive upsurge of people choosing Turkey for holidays. I live near Manchester airport and I would estimate that there are now more flights going to Turkey than Spain. The Spanish authorities need to act now before it's to late.

Así que Canarias ya no es un paraíso. The problem with the Canary Islands is that more tourists come here each year than to Brazil, a region infinitely smaller and more vulnerable. Manrique already said this decades ago. So the Canary Islands are no longer a paradise. It's unbearable for the resident population. Nothing is respected, and while governments turn a blind eye, our oceans are seriously polluted, reaching the point of great risk for all bathers and for our beautiful marine fauna... And I could go on and on adding things to this massive invasion of our islands by excessive tourism and investment that in no way benefits the Canarian people in the short and medium term.

I was with my daughter in Matagorda during 7th-18th Apr and of course the flooding in las Cucharas happened. A few friends from the UK text to see if we were ok and I had to explain the reality of it, not what the Media spun which was way overblown.

Going forward we will see more examples like, 'Majorca fightbacks for over tourism', as well as wild fires and Red Travel restriction alerts.

I saw a few of these Vv short stay Apartments & Houses on recent stay in Lanzarote. I agree with other comments that these should be left to local market. We stayed in traditional type hotel which is where holidays are for. Short stay properties should pay a high tourist tax to balance out investment by genuine holiday complexes. That would even things out fairly fast

Solutions??? Why not discuss the solutions with the locals??? Specific solutions!

Love Lanzarote. We always stay in a lovely complex in Matagorda. Family owned and for the real tourist. Never knew water was been turned off. Terrible.

I'm currently in lanzarote from the uk and I absolutely support the locals and their demonstrations. There should be a cap on the amount of tourists. I'd also like to add we have been made to feel very welcome and had no sign of negativity or aggression.

Am here now, I also agree with the protests, local people should have water and affordable housing over what tourists want

No tourists No jobs then canarians would have to leave the island to find work ...get the government to sort out the housing just like in the UK

Nutshell: tourism has skyrocketed accomodation prices meaning Canaries residents can’t afford the rent.

The government are intentionally doing this.

It’s called gentrification.

Tourists are not to blame.

I live on the Mainland in Málaga and not aware of any tourist taxes in locally although it may differ in other Autonomo regions. I was in Mallorca for 3 days last weekend and was charged €3.30 tourist tax per night. Didn't bother me in the slightest if it helps the local area. Maybe Lanzarote should introduce a tourist tax which may help further with local resources like the water issue.

Thanks for the update MrTravelON 👍🏼😊 We’ve visited Lanzarote ten times since 2013 - we’ve always stayed in hotels (Playa Blanca) and our priority has ALWAYS been to support the local businesses. We’ve never stayed all inclusive because an essential part of the holiday to us is to go out and experience the local cuisine at all of the different restaurants. We’ve hired a car every time as well to allow us to visit and support other parts of the island 👍🏼😊

For the Brits who come often to Spain: something that might help with accepting you better is *learning the language*! I'm sick and tired of so many Brits in Andalusia, like some of my neighbors, who've been either coming here or even living here for decades and still don't speak any Spanish at all. I wonder what those people think of foreigners living in the UK and not speaking a word of English?

We have stayed in PDC on holiday for the last 10 years and all the locals are so friendly and want tourists all the posters up saying we love tourists booked twice for next year 😊

Why build the airport bigger if you don't want more tourists?
Why build more big hotels if you don't want more tourists?
Why don't you fix the water pipes that leak at least 60% of the water into the ground, then maybe there would have been enough water for everyone?
Why do you bring in cheap labor from the third world if you want higher wages?
Why do restaurants hire cheap labor from abroad and at the same time complain that the Spanish don't want to work for them?
Why don't you throw out all the illegals who shouldn't be there?
Why do you blame everything on Airbnb and not the hotels?
Why do you blame everything on the tourists?
The hotels are the ones that offer "All inclusive" which means they spend less on the restaurants.
Why does everyone want to stay in the tourist resorts now, wasn't it just for tourists?
Why do you have to profit from tourists and suck them out, aren't they also working people like you who need a little vacation?
Why do you see tourists as a product?
Why do you want all the cruise ships from all over the world to the port of Lanzarote, when you don't want more of them?
Why build a new terminal for these cruise ships if you've had enough of tourists?

Simple solution - Let the tourist resorts that were built for tourists be for tourists and don't build any more.

Local people first. Many companies are using the canaries to make big money. Love the canary island. Sad i was not born there. If i see this protests i feel bad and don't want to go there ever again.

Todo el ropaje,medicamentos,alimentos coches,zapatos,teléfonos,petróleo,les viene de afuera. La isla ya no es hermosa.
