AI is a major buzzword these days, and it’s role in the automotive world has touched almost every aspect of the car industry, from design to driving.

One of the most impactful applications of AI in the automotive industry is in the design process. Traditional methods of car design were long and expensive. You’d create a concept, build a prototype, test it, and then make improvements. AI has made this much faster, and delivering an optimal solution that can then be prototyped.
In factories, robots used to follow pre-set programs. Now, with AI, these robots are much smarter. They analyze the materials and adapt based on real-time data, which makes the assembly process more efficient and flexible.
You’ve probably heard of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These include features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, which help drivers by automating tasks. You might think, “That’s great—it makes driving easier.” However, there are downsides too.
Adaptive cruise control doesn’t just maintain your set speed. It adjusts based on traffic, keeping a safe distance from the car in front of you. Similarly, lane-keeping assist helps prevent you from drifting out of your lane. While this sounds useful, there’s a flip side. For example, I’ve experienced lane assist trying to steer me back when I was purposely avoiding a pothole. In these cases, I had to wrestle with the system just to maintain control of the car.
The Rise of AI Entertainment and Maintenance Systems. You can talk to your car and ask for directions or to play music. However, as handy as this sounds, early versions had serious flaws. I remember asking for directions at 4 a.m. and the system thought I wanted to call someone! Have you had similar experiences?
Cars today also monitor maintenance more closely than ever. They use AI to determine service intervals based on how you drive, which can make the car safer and extend its lifespan. This is where AI excels—analyzing vast amounts of data and adjusting based on real-time conditions.
Self-Driving Cars: Are They Ready?
Fully autonomous vehicles are still under development, but companies like Tesla and Waymo are leading the way. These cars use AI to make decisions while driving, analyzing road conditions and traffic in real-time. However, this technology is far from perfect. One of the main concerns is moral decision-making. If an AI must choose between two bad outcomes—like swerving into a crowd of elderly people or hitting a group of children—how does it decide?
There’s also a significant trust issue. A recent survey found that 61% of U.S. citizens don’t trust fully autonomous cars to safely transport their loved ones. About 93% of respondents were skeptical about these systems in general. While some people think the technology will eventually get there, many believe we’re not quite ready for it yet.
AI collects a lot of data while you drive—your speed, location, driving habits, and more. This has raised serious questions about data privacy. Who owns that data, and who can access it? Could this information be misused by companies, authorities, or even hackers? These are valid concerns as cars become more connected.
Another issue arises with autonomous braking systems. These can automatically stop the car in emergencies, but they’re not foolproof. There have been cases where the system activated because of a bird flying by, causing the car to stop abruptly. A human driver would’ve ignored the bird, avoiding a potential accident.
The Future of AI in Cars: Is It a Threat or a Tool?
The benefits of AI in cars are clear: reduced manufacturing costs, potentially safer driving experiences, and more efficient vehicle maintenance.
