I've actually seen something very similar to the drive laser trick - but with an addition of a rotating mirror to reflect the laser (say, one you could get out of a laser printer).
What you get is basically a laser-projected oscilloscope - you won't use it for anything practical most likely, but I still find it to be an incredibly cool project.

you could make a bomb by using capacitors and adding matches to in side of it
then closing it so no air could get in
then heat it up and run far away not to get eye damage.
