The new owner of WJM-TV (played by Vincent Gardenia) goes over the poor ratings for the newscast and decides that the problem lies more with the off-air staff than with the on-air talent. Hence Ted Baxter gets to keep his job but Mary, Murray, Lou and Sue Ann get fired - and he especially wants Mary out. Before the last news broadcast with the whole team, Lou arranges a surprise for Mary.

When this episode, the series finale, originally aired on CBS on Saturday, March 19, 1977, the final curtain call was used for the closing credits, but standard closing credits showing brief clips from the episode were used when CBS re-aired it on Saturday, September 17, 1977, just before the start of the 1977-78 American television season. ("Lou Grant" debuted three days after.) The final curtain call was never shown again, not even in syndication. This cut has both the final curtain call and the standard closing credits.
