After completing my first marathon i had this wonderful idea of doing an ironman. And so naturally i decided to sign up for my first triathlon in preparation for the ironman.

And boy did I choose a good one.

So I signed for The Xterra triathlon in Grabouw. Training up to that point wasn’t really anything to be proud of, in fact it was bare minimum.
The race was held at Eikenhof dam in grabouw.
I registered for the full distance which is a 1.5km swim, 30km mtb and 10km trail run

Let's talk Swim. Now I am not a pro swimmer, in fact I am far from it.
But I figured, *how hard can it be?* I mean, it’s just water, right?
Wrong! The first 100 meters were like doing a 100 lunges in knee deep water.

Yeah it was that shallow
It eventually got so deep, that I managed to start swimming.
But boy! did I struggle on the first lap of the swim. Felt like I was in a washing machine, getting smacked, pulled and everything else.

But here is the twist.
On the second lap of the swim. Suddenly, I’m feeling it.
I started passing people like I’ve unlocked some hidden swimming powers.I just powered past people like a boat.

The Bike, this was my happy place.
As a ex cyclist, I was ready to crush this part, and guess what? I *did*.
The course was rocky, sandy, and full of single track, which felt like a mountain bike dream come true.
People were dropping like flies, and I was passing them like it was my job.

'Oh, you can’t handle this rocky terrain? No problem, I got this!

However, here’s where the plot thickens…
I may have gotten a little too cocky. You see, I gave the bike leg everything I had — maybe a bit too much.
The last 10 kilometers? Let’s just say I was praying for a miracle.
I could feel cramps sneaking up on me like little ninjas.
I even thought of getting off the bike and just curling up in a fetal position. But no, I pushed through.

The Run. Oh boy the run.
My legs were like, 'Remember all those times you thought you were fit? Yeah
Bam bam chops, cramp.

I didn’t even make it a kilometer before my legs decided to cramp up and freeze. I mean, literally freeze.

I had to stop, stretch, and contemplate life choices. Like what the heck.

People passing me was probably like "is he ok?"

I was not ok, okay.
But I was determined.
4 hours later... I crossed that finish line.
And I did it. 11th in my age group. Nothing to brag about.
I wasn’t exactly on the podium, but hey, I was closer than I thought I'd be.
Honestly, this Xterra was brutal.
This race is no joke, but it’s way more fun than just running 42 kilometers on a flat road.
So if you are thinking of doing your first triathlon, it's tough, but it's totally worth it.
Anyways I will see you in the next one.
