This blues jam proved to be one of the highlights of my time spent gigging in local bands.
I was on bass and it was a privilege to play alongside such gifted musicians.
This session took place in July 1999 in a small hall next to a pub in Sandy, Bedfordshire.
I apologise for the sub-standard quality of this recording but I think it’s pretty good considering it was captured on an old portable cassette machine about 20 years ago.
It's amazing how well the little built in microphone copes with the range in volume and you can feel the limiter kick in as we started to crank it up.
I split the original track into various frequency ranges in GarageBand and added some EQing, stereo widening before mastering. This helped remove some of the unwanted noises boomyness and hiss.
It was standard practice for either myself or Alan (the drummer) to record our performances with the various musicians we played with.
I had auditioned on bass with this band (2 guitarists- Ray and Tim and 2 girl singers- Liz and Rebecca) the previous week and they invited me back to bring Alan along. So this was the first time we had played (auditioned) with them together.
To find some common ground we started a good old 12 bar blues. Little did we know that it would go stonkin’!
I'd like to think that our solid rhythm section inspired Tim and Ray to push each other to go further as they took turns playing lead.
As Alan the drummer later commented:
“That was always a favourite memorable (musical) moment of mine. I’ve not listened to it for a few years as it is on cassette but I have occasionally played it. It always sent a tingle down my spine.
The two guitars (Tim and Ray) just ‘escalated’, getting ‘higher’, playing off each other... Just when I expected it to end, the other lifted it ‘higher’ with another solo. I guess we all got ‘lost in the moment’.
That is my epitome of ‘getting in the groove’, or ‘locked in the pocket’... when you are oblivious to everything else and taken higher spiritually too.
This was the first time we’d played with them (it was an audition!) and I remember Steve (bass) and I kept looking at each other, we just didn’t want that moment to end”.
Mixed and mastered using GarageBand on iPad and MacBook.
Other apps used were:
Music- Grand Finale (Mastering).
Video- Wizibel
I hope you enjoy listening to our Stonkin' Sandy Blues Jam. ✌️
